Video shows bear breaking into popular Northern Michigan chocolate shop

Bear took down entire bag of sugar

EMPIRE, Mich. – A black bear with a sweet tooth broke into a popular Michigan chocolate shop, and it’s all caught on video.

Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate, up in Empire, Michigan, near Sleeping Bear Dunes, captured the bear opening its back door and feasting on a bag of sugar.

Jody Hayden, owner of the chocolate shop, said they first noticed the bear five nights prior. She talked to Local 4′s Christy McDonald during the Daily+ Live on Monday, streaming on Local 4+.

“We’ve never had a bear try to open a door to our shop before,” Hayden said. After seeing it for the first time, they reinforced their doors and garbage, but it just wasn’t enough.

“We’ve been mostly having fun with this, but it’s been a good learning lesson for us. He only took one 50 pound bag of sugar, when he could have destroyed our whole shop, so we feel very grateful that it wasn’t worse,” Hayden said.

The bear did come back again the next night, but couldn’t get in. The DNR relocated the bear, according to Hayden. She said the shop was getting a new steel door installed.
