A west Michigan police officer died Wednesday morning after he was involved in a crash in Norton Shores, which is just south of Muskegon.
The Norton Shores Police Department said the veteran officer was severely injured when his cruiser crashed about 2:32 a.m. at Henry Street and Ross Road. Police said it was a single vehicle accident.

No other injuries were reported.
From Norton Shores police:
The officer was transported to Hackley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Michigan State Police were called in to investigate the accident and at this time it is undetermined how the crash occurred.
The officer was a 10-year veteran of the Norton Shores Police Department and leaves behind a wife and two children. The name of the officer will be released at a press conference later today.
WOODTV reports the officer's cruiser was destroyed.

The Muskegon County Sheriff's Office identified the officer as Jon Ginka. The Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook:
The members of the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office are deeply saddened at the news of NSPD Officer Jon Ginka. We offer our deepest condolences to the City of Norton Shores and to Officer Ginka's family.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette tweeted his sympathy:
