OAK PARK, Mich. – Investigators in Oak Park are working to figure out why a man called police Monday night and then charged at officers with a hatchet.
That cost him his life.
In happened about 6:30 p.m. Monday in the 23000 block of Avon Road, near 9 Mile and Greenfield roads. A 48-year-old man called 911 and said he had a hatchet and a gun. He threatened to "shoot up" the neighborhood.
When police arrived at the home they found his mother inside. Officers brought her out of the home to the front porch, then went back inside.
That's where the man charged at them armed with a hatchet. One officer fired a single shot, killing the man, Oak Park police said.
"It's pretty tough," said Steve Cooper, director of Oak Park Public Safety. "If someone already had those intentions already set in their mind and you're forced to respond to it, you have to react with your training and do the best you can in those situations."
Police said there have been other incidents at the home before, but did not elaborate on what those incidents were.
The officer was placed on paid leave for now while an investigation is ongoing. The Oakland County Sheriff's Department will conduct the investigation into the shooting.
