Police: Thieves cutting through businesses rooftops

Investigators in St. Clair Shores, three others searching for suspects

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – Police in St. Clair Shores are working with police from three other suburban police departments in an effort to catch thieves who are cutting their way through business rooftops to get inside.

One of the shops hit in recent days is the Dollar Tree store on Harper at 13 Mile in St. Clair Shores.

"Someone went through the roof, cut through the roof to get inside the store. They broke into the office and then cut the side off of a safe with some sort of grinding tool." St. Clair Shores police detective Gordon Carrier tells Local 4 News.

Police believe it is the same suspects who cut through rooftops to gain entry into dollar stores and auto parts shops in:

  • Eastpointe
  • Warren
  • Center Line

All the rooftop break-ins are happening in the early morning hours. Five businesses have been hit so far.

So far there is no security camera video showing the people involved or what vehicle they may be using. All the break-ins have occurred in one month.
