Romeo High addresses racial threats

ROMEO, Mich. – School officials are confronting racial tensions at Romeo High School that have exploded into threats of violence.

Romeo High School celebrated a state football championship this year, but students say those good feelings are overshadowed by feelings of hate.

“There’s people who like to say the n-word in school,” sophomore Dashanae Chaney said.

One student tweeted:

“Every black person in the school feels the same way, it ain’t just me. We know who is and isn’t racist around the school, we’re all tired of it.”

Threats of violence surfaced on social media.

“Might be fighting a black boy tomorrow. Maybe ten. Imma have all my country boys run them over with their trucks,” one student posted.

Principal Michael Kaufman said the students making threats were disciplined for breaking the code of conduct.

School leaders have addressed and discussed respecting diversity at school. Conversations have taken place with parents of the students involved.
