Tom Gores, Consumers Energy pledge $2 million for Flint Promise scholarship program

FLINT, Mich. – A $2 million pledge by Tom Gores and Consumers Energy was made Wednesday to fund the creation of a Flint Promise scholarship program.

Gores made a $million personal pledge, marking the latest initiative under his FlintNOW campaign.

“I grew up in Flint, went to school here and appreciate the power of education to transform people’s lives and revitalize a community,” Gores said. “Every student who works hard deserves a chance to earn a college degree. We want to give those kids and their families a reason to dream and provide them the resources to make those dreams come true.”

Consumers Energy President and CEO Patti Poppe made the announcement with Gores at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

“Our investment in Flint and the education of our future workforce aligns perfectly with our commitment to the people of Michigan,” Poppe said. “Flint has started a remarkable comeback from recent challenges, and we see our contribution as a down payment for a bright future for a community that we are proud to serve.”

Many features of the scholarship are yet to be determined, including specifically which high schools’ graduates will be eligible, what institutions will initially participate and many other elements.

The scholarship has a goal to launch for the 2018-2019 school year.
