Universal Newsreel describes Detroit after the fourth day of riots

A Universal Newsreel gives an update on the state of Detroit after four days of rioting, looting and arson.

Voiced by Ed Herlihy, the film shows infernos spreading across the city and the extent of the damage.

By the fourth day, 36 people were killed, more than 2,000 injured and damages totaled over a half billion dollars. A curfew was declared and troopers dealt with sniper fire while patrolling the streets. Civil rights leaders made a joint condemnation of the violence and called for an end of the riots.

Michigan Gov. George Romney requested federal troops from President Lyndon B. Johnson.

“Law and order have broken down in Detroit, Michigan. Pillage, looting, murder and arson have nothing to do with civil rights. They are criminal conduct, and the federal government and circumstances here presented have no alternative but to respond,” Johnson said.
