According to the American Kennel Club, pets can have turkey and pork, though holiday dinners usually include meats that pets shouldn't have. Plain meats can be consumed by dogs, but seasonings and sauces can make them sick. Also, onion powder, garlic powder and nutmeg are highly toxic to dogs.

Fatty foods and salt can also make dogs sick.

Foods containing artificial sweetener xylitol are also toxic to pets. Diet and low-calorie foods may be made with the sweetener.

Other foods that should not be given to dogs include tea, chocolate, garlic, avocado, alcohol, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts and onions.
