DETROIT – October is American Humane's Adopt a Dog Month.
This year, American Humane is seeking to bring awareness about older pets in shelters that are in need of homes.

According to American Humane, dogs over the age of 6 or 7 make great additions to families because they are often less rambunctious than younger dogs and usually are already house-trained. Also, they're good for people with busy lifestyles, and will love you unconditionally when given a second chance.
“It’s heartbreaking to think about all the senior animals who had been cherished pets before they suddenly found themselves confused and alone in shelter kennels,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. “Far too often this happens to many older dogs through no fault of their own — after their human owners encounter financial troubles, illness, or other life upheavals.”
If you aren't ready to adopt a new pet this month, there are other ways you can celebrate Adopt a Dog Month:
Spay or neuter your dog
Prevent unexpected puppies that may end up in shelters by spaying or neutering your pet. According to American Humane, animals that are fixed tend to lead longer, healthier lives and have fewer behavioral problems than animals who have not been fixed.
ID your pet
Pets with ID tags and microchips have less of a chance of ending up "homeless" in a shelter. According to American Humane, only 15-20 percent of dogs who end up in a shelter are actually reunited with their owners.
Support an animal shelter
If you can't adopt a pet, you can still make a difference in the life of shelter pets.

Volunteer at a shelter this month to help the animals that are still looking for homes. If you can't donate your time, donate pet supplies, such as food and toys, to a shelter or rescue group.
