‘It’s not gambling’: What Holly Campbell thinks of Detroit Lions 4th-down aggression

Dan Campbell has reputation for being aggressive on fourth down

DETROIT – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is known across the NFL for his aggressive nature on fourth down.

His wife, Holly, sat down with Local 4’s Karen Drew to talk about a variety of topics, and she shared her honest thoughts about those fourth-down decisions.

“I always know that it’s a possibility,” she said. “I always know that it can happen. But I also know that he’s not -- it’s not gambling.

“All these plays they’ve practiced and practiced and practiced, and they have a set of conditions, and if those conditions are not there, he’s either not going to call it or they can move out of it. They can change the play in the middle.”

She said all of those specific factors have to line up for the Lions to actually use a certain play in a big fourth-down spot.

“So I know if they call it and do it, there are pretty high odds they’re going to get it,” she said.

That doesn’t mean she isn’t nervous, though, because those are often the moments that decide a game.

“But I do know that it’s more of an exact science than it is like a Hail Mary,” Holly said.
