Allen Park, Mich.Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes spoke candidly about veteran offensive lineman Taylor Decker’s potential retirement, Frank Ragnow‘s update, and the team’s ongoing efforts to maintain depth on the offensive line.

Holmes acknowledged that the organization has never ignored Decker’s contemplation of retirement.

“It’s going to come at some point,” said Holmes, noting the team has had a strong veteran offensive line in the past, including four first-round picks at one time.

While the team drafted offensive tackle Giovanni Manu two years ago as a developmental player, Holmes emphasized it would be irresponsible to assume a developmental player would immediately fill any potential void.

Holmes stressed the importance of addressing any questions or gaps with urgency during the offseason.

Regarding Ragnow’s retirement, Holmes said the decision came after the draft, likely in late May.

Although there were signs beforehand, the team did not know for certain until then.

After Ragnow attempted a midseason comeback but failed his physical, Holmes said the team and Ragnow went their separate ways, with no concrete plans for another return.

Holmes praised Ragnow’s caliber, saying, “You haven’t seen a Frank Ragnow since Frank Ragnow,” and acknowledged the difficulty in replacing a player of his quality immediately.

On the offensive line as a whole, Holmes said the position has not been ignored despite challenges in the draft and free agency.

Holmes highlighted the injection of youth the team made and the need for patience as young players develop.

When asked about options like Tate Ratledge or Manu stepping into larger roles, Holmes said the team is still conducting a deep analysis of the roster and operations.

Ratledge, who has logged significant snaps this year, remains an option at guard or center.

Holmes said Manu has taken steps forward but must continue to compete and earn his role.

“He’s going to have to win a job,” Holmes said, emphasizing the importance of player effort and development.
