3 TCU (12-1) will square off in the Fiesta Bowl national semifinal on Saturday. Michigan is in the playoff for the second straight season and hasn’t lost since falling to Georgia 34-11 in last year’s Orange Bowl. It has been the best second-half team in the country, outscoring opponents by 206 points. The Horned Frogs also have been a strong second-half team under first-year coach Sonny Dykes. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The TCU football players have been studying the Michigan football team for weeks. But how much do they know about the state of Michigan? On Thursday, they were asked a handful of questions about the Mitten State. It’s understandable given that most of the players on the Texas Christian University roster are from Texas. And remember, the questions and answers were all in good fun in advance of Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl matchup between TCU and Michigan (4:10 p.m.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Alan Bowman ascended the stairs to the second floor of Schembechler Hall and knocked on a door that was already open. Bowman wanted to be part of the preparation for that game; to travel with the team, practice, and, if needed, take snaps at quarterback against TCU. One respected college football prognosticator, Phil Steele, projected Bowman would be Michigan’s starting quarterback that season. The job instead went to Cade McNamara, who guided Michigan to a Big Ten championship and playoff appearance. “I want to play,” Bowman said, recalling the exchange on Thursday.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The three Michigan receivers limited earlier in the week at practice were back at it Thursday, two days before the Fiesta Bowl matchup. Henning and Amorion Walker were all in uniform, going through pre-game warmups and running routes ahead of Saturday’s game against No. Anthony still had his right ankle wrapped, but he looked mobile and was a full participant during the early portions of practice. Walker, who was an onlooker during practice on Tuesday, was in full uniform and a participant. With two quarterbacks on their way out, Michigan football was in need of an insurance policy for 2023. Jim Harbaugh and co. appear to have found one on Tuesday, landing sixth-year signal caller Jack Tuttle from the transfer portal. Tuttle comes from Indiana, where he started five games over the span of five seasons in Bloomington. He transferred to Indiana the following season but was never able to win the starting job full time. Tuttle is the sixth player from the transfer portal to verbally commit to the Wolverines this cycle, giving Michigan the No.

For the second time in less than a month, Michigan has lost a scholarship quarterback to the transfer portal. Bowman, who transferred in from Texas Tech prior to the 2021 season, never saw much playing time with the Wolverines. Quarterback Alan Bowman is entering his second season at Michigan with the same mentality he has carried throughout his football career. “There were definitely times in my life where football was hard,” Bowman told MLive in a phone interview. “Obviously, I would love to be the starting quarterback and I’d love to be playing at the University of Michigan. So I didn’t really know what a championship mentality was like and what it looks like. Bowman doesn’t know how the quarterback competition will play out in 2022, but he’s much more comfortable heading into year two at Michigan.

ANN ARBOR – Michigan football gave fans a sneak peek of its 2022 team Saturday, showing off a split roster scrimmage for the annual Spring Game. The Blue team, led by co-offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, defeated the Maize team, led by co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale, 20-12. Warren Davis and Alex Orji saw time for the Maize team, while Alan Bowman led the blue team, with J.J. McCarthy in uniform but remaining the sidelines after arm injury limited his spring practice. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was named honorary captain for the game, and led the coin toss and a throwing exhibition at halftime. The quarterback situations for both Michigan and Michigan State appear to be promising heading into 2022 and beyond. ESPN released its top 25 future quarterback power rankings Thursday, and the Wolverines and Spartans both are in the top 15 after not cracking the top 25 in 2021. The rankings are based on projections for programs’ starters and the depth behind them over the next three seasons. The Wolverines, who return their top two quarterbacks in redshirt junior Cade McNamara and sophomore J.J. McCarthy, check in at No. “If he can improve his accuracy a touch, Michigan State should be very productive on offense again, even after losing running back Kenneth Walker III, the Doak Walker Award winner,” Rittenberg wrote.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been slowed this spring due to a lingering shoulder injury, putting a dent in the offseason position battle. Head coach Jim Harbaugh characterized the injury to McCarthy on Tuesday as “some lingering arm soreness” that carried over from the 2021 season, and said Michigan sought clarity from doctors on a plan. “We got a short-term plan; we got a long-term plan for his health,” Harbaugh told reporters at Schembechler Hall. McCarthy will remain active in practices,“We’re not having him throw right now,” said Harbaugh, who declined to provide a timetable on when McCarthy might throw again. He threw for 516 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns, as Michigan’s backup last season.

Another day, another Michigan football player in the transfer portal — and this one should lighten the load in a crowded quarterback room. Sophomore Dan Villari, a reserve quarterback with four in-game appearances for the Wolverines, has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Thursday. Villari did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor he has publicly announced the move yet. Harbaugh later compared Villari’s skillset to NFL quarterback Taysom Hill, and Michigan featured Villari in wildcat and goal-line packages (he added nine carries for 35 yards). Five Michigan players have entered the NCAA transfer portal this week, with Villari being the first on the offensive side of the ball.

McNamara closed spring atop Michigan’s depth chart at quarterback, ahead of true freshman J.J. McCarthy and redshirt freshman Dan Villari. Cade McNamara will get first-team reps at quarterback when Michigan opens fall camp on Aug. 6 in Ann Arbor, giving him a leg up ahead of the 2021 season, the Wolverines’ head coach told reporters at Big Ten Media Days. McNamara earned the spot after an “outstanding” spring, edging out true-freshman J.J. McCarthy and redshirt freshman Dan Villari. His lone start, in the season finale against Penn State, ended with him leaving the game with a shoulder injury. If there was any doubt about where things stand at quarterback for Michigan, its first-year coach in charge of the position crystalized it this week. Matt Weiss, in an interview on the “In the Trenches” podcast, referred to junior quarterback Cade McNamara as the Wolverines’ clear-cut No. Michigan just wrapped up its 15-practice spring schedule last weekend, which culminated with a closed-to-the-public spring game in Ann Arbor in which McNamara was named game MVP. Milton has since elected to transfer out of Michigan, leaving the 6-foot-1, 205-pound McNamara as the only quarterback on the roster with any college experience. is a highly-talented guy,” Weiss said.

Michigan eventually granted the starting job to redshirt sophomore Joe Milton, who’s unique arm strength and stature weren’t enough to overcome faults in his play. By the end of the six-game schedule, McNamara had claimed the starting job — a move some wondered could stretch into 2021. “The quarterbacks have done a really good job of doing what we’re asking them to do,” Gattis said. It’s still early, and the quarterback competition at Michigan is far from decided. Yet two weeks into spring practice, junior Cade McNamara is making an impression on his teammates. It’s not like he hasn’t before — he beat out Joe Milton for the starting job last fall, at least temporarily, before the Wolverines’ season was upended by COVID-19 concerns. Obviously he played a little bit last season — but it’s different when you think you have the starting job. “Whether he won the job or didn’t have the job before, it was never anything new to me about Cade,” Bell said.

The latest twist in the Michigan quarterback offseason saga came Sunday afternoon, when graduate transfer Alan Bowman announced plans to play in Ann Arbor this fall. Whether he enjoys similar success at Michigan remains unclear, but his planned transfer signals the coaching staff’s desire to add a ready-to-play quarterback. Meanwhile, the two other scholarship quarterbacks currently on Michigan’s roster — Dan Villari and J.J. McCarthy — have yet to play a snap. The move will likely generate some groans from Michigan football diehards, some of whom have criticized Harbaugh for his mediocre development of quarterbacks. And even if Bowman isn’t that guy — perhaps he could help bring it out of someone else.

Milton entered the transfer portal, and Bowman would give the Wolverines an experienced option, assuming he's able to play for them immediately.

Another quarterback is about to enter the mix for Michigan this offseason, giving the Wolverines another option behind center in 2021. Alan Bowman, a grad transfer from Texas Tech who will be immediately eligible to play this fall, announced plans to transfer to Michigan on Sunday. In an announcement on social media, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Bowman posted a graphic of himself in a Michigan uniform with the message, “Lets get to work!! Hampered by injuries, Bowman only played in eight games his freshman season -- and three games in 2019, which he redshirted. In January, Bowman announced plans to depart Texas Tech with three years of eligibility remaining.
