HOLLAND, MI – The Holland Board of Education has selected Shanie Keelean to serve as the district’s next superintendent. Keelean is currently associate superintendent of school leadership and development at Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 in Illinois. The school board voted 6-1 to enter into contract negotiations with Keelean during a June 3 special board meeting. Six board members voted in favor of selecting Keelean, and trustee Liz Colburn abstained from the vote. The district’s three elementary schools – Holland Heights, Jefferson and West – will be the primary focus of the bond. Around $9 million will be spent renovating the high school and $8 million will be spent on the middle school. Zeeland Public Schools passed a $75 million bond proposal that will help the growing school district keep up with rising student enrollment and upgrade its aging facilities.

A large number of Holland teachers, bus drivers and school staff received their first round of vaccinations that day, Davis said. The Holland Virtual Tech and Holland Early College programs also switched to online learning Monday for contact tracing. The district announced Sunday, Oct. 11, that the high school would be closed the following day in “an abundance of caution” for contact tracing.

ROMULUS, Mich. Two people have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Eugene Davis, 40, of Romulus. Davis was shot and killed on May 19 at 8:35 p.m. in Romulus. Police officers were called to a gas station in the 27400 block of Eureka Road near Inkster Road. When officers arrived they saw the Romulus Fire Department rescue and Taylor rescue teams on scene. Officials said Davis approached the defendants vehicle and McMillon, who was a passenger, pulled out a weapon and shot Davis.
