DDOT installing 288 safety barriers amid COVID-19 pandemic
DETROIT โ A total of 288 safety barriers are being installed on Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) buses in an initiative to protect the safety and health of bus drivers and passengers during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, according to city officials. โWeโre excited about the new barriers as part of our ongoing commitment to protect the bus operators and the riders,โ Oglesby said. โWe consider our bus drivers among our cityโs first responders and they deserve to have the protection they need and deserve.โAdditionally, bus drivers staged a work stoppage in October over concerns of safety amid the pandemic. โThe barriers are an important piece in resuming fare collection, but not the only piece,โ Oglesby said. With the exception of ADA front-door boarding, all passengers will enter and exit the bus through the rear door.
Video shows altercation between DDOT bus driver, passenger
DETROIT โ A video shows intense moments between a bus driver and passenger on board a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus. The incident on Sept. 8 led bus drivers across the city to walk out on the job earlier Friday morning after the city suspended the driver. Oglesby said that is an understatement after 288 bus drivers walked off the job Friday morning. The drivers are claiming unclean conditions and an unfair suspension of their fellow bus driver, who they said is a victim of an assault. The video appears to show the driver punching the rider first, multiple times, even slamming him to the ground.
Were putting it on the line: DDOT bus drivers want more protection amid COVID-19 pandemic
DETROIT Detroit Department of Transportation bus drivers have been some of the essential employees who have been hit hard on the front lines of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Now, drivers are worried a promise was made by city hall for more protection that may not be fulfilled. Drivers who said theyve been assaulted and spit on said they want face shields for protection. They said the city promised face shields, but its taking more time than they expected. My men and women are putting it on the line every day, President of DDOT Union Local 26 Glenn Tolbert said.
