Meet the 2022 All-Flint Metro League Stars Division softball team
FLINT – Co-champions Owosso and Clio put seven players apiece on the All-Flint Metro League Stars Division softball team. Clio had five players make the first team and Owosso put four players on the first team. Owosso and Clio shared the Stars Division championship with 17-3 records, six games ahead of third-place Ortonville Brandon. Here is the team selected by league coaches. The Frankenmuth sophomore crushed two homers Saturday, leading the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 10-0 five-inning win over a sixth-ranked Clio team that beat Frankenmuth, 2-1, exactly one week earlier. “I wasn’t surprised we won, but I think everybody was expecting a 2-1 or 3-2 game,” Frankenmuth coach Brad Walraven said. But with Brooklyn Compau at first to lead off the second inning, Schafsnitz cleared the 200-foot fence in centerfield to give Frankenmuth a 2-0 lead. By the time the second inning ended, Frankenmuth sent 12 batters to plate to earn a 7-0 lead. “I put a lot of time into hitting,” Schafsnitz said.

KOCHVILLE TWP, MI — More details have emerged regarding two fires at a haunted attraction in rural Saginaw County, the first allegedly started by a marooned Clio woman. At the scene was a 27-year-old Clio woman with a lighter in her pocket, said Saginaw County Sheriff William L. Federspiel. The woman then apparently walked to the Wild Woods, a distance of nearly four miles. The Wild Woods had been closed for several years before the fires. On scene was a 27-year-old woman, the same woman associated with the car on the Zilwaukee Bridge, Kolb said. About 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, a passerby on Venoy Road spotted more flames at the Wild Woods and notified Saginaw County Central Dispatch. The arrested woman’s name is being withheld pending arraignment in Saginaw County District Court. VIENNA TWP., MI – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged a mother with second-degree child abuse in connection with an incident at a Clio-area elementary school that left more than a dozen students ill and five students hospitalized. Her six-year-old child then took them to school and other students ingested them. She made a mistake, but it’s a mistake that has caused a lot of havoc.”Second-degree child abuse in Michigan is a 10-year felony. First responders were called to the elementary school around 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, after several students reported to their teacher that they were feeling ill.Students were evacuated from the school as another form of caution. According to the letter, five kindergarten students from one classroom were transported to Hurley Medical Center in Flint.

FLINT – Three Flint-area teams won district wrestling championships Thursday. Goodrich and Clio won in Division 2 while New Lothrop won in Division 4. FLINT – Taryn Eckert of Clio, Alexander Hect of Swartz Creek, Olivia Dirkse of Davison and Jacob Gonzales of Holly have been named the Kiwanis Club of Flint’s Student-Athletes of the Month for December and January. Eckert plays volleyball and soccer at Clio. She was a four-year varsity player in volleyball, serving as team captain the past three years and making first-team all-league the last three years. She was honorable mention All-State as a senior, when she was named the Mustangs’ best defender.

SAGINAW, MI — Before her 20th birthday, a Clio woman has been charged with murder in the recent homicide of a wheelchair-bound man found deceased in his burned Birch Run Township home. Saginaw County District Judge Terry L. Clark on the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 26, arraigned Faith A. Lord on charges of felony murder and felony firearm. Saginaw County Jail records indicate a fourth suspect was arrested by deputies later on Tuesday. “Scott was a member of the Birch Run United Methodist Church and the Arbor Day Society,” his obituary states. FLINT – Runner-up Fenton put six runners on the All-Flint Metro League boys cross country team while league champion Linden has five as well as the coach of the year, Trevor Hall. The 2021 team was selected by league coaches. Linden finished first with 47 points after winning the second jamboree as well as the league meet. Fenton was two points back after finishing second in the league meet and second jamboree. Flushing senior Blake Chipman helped the Raiders finish fourth in the Flint Metro League cross country standings.

THETFORD TOWNSHIP, MI -- A 44-year-old Clio man died in a single-vehicle crash in Genesee County Tuesday, which police say was separate from a road rage incident that occurred minutes before in the same area. Minutes before this crash, there was a separate “road rage incident” between two parties driving down North Dort Highway, Vetter said. The two parties in this incident ended up in a ditch off of near the telephone pole the victim in the single-vehicle crash later hit. FLINT – Jeremy Williams of Lapeer and Mary Richmond of Frankenmuth were the boys and girls winners in the 5,000 meter porition of the Greater Flint Cross Country Championships at the Cummings Center in Mt. Williams clocked 15:27.20 to finish more than 20 seconds ahead of Davison’s Brady McArdle, who had a time of 15:47.98. Rounding out the boys top 10 behind Williams and McArdle were Flushing’s Blake Chipman, Linden’s Kyle Eberhard, Davison’s Kenny Minto, Linden’s River Meckstroth, Lapeer’s Michael Williams, Fenton’s Michael Crane and the Powers duo of Lucas Danic and Chase Dietrich. In the girls 5,000 meters, Richmond won with a time of 18:09.93 while twin sisters Lola and Sophia Thomas of Grand Blanc were second and third, respectively, with times of 18:45.06 and 19:08.76. GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Two Kearsley elementary schools and one Clio elementary school have closed today due to power outages in the district after last night’s storms. Both Dowdall and Fiedler Elementary are closed today due to outages at Kearsley Community Schools. Power should be restored this afternoon, according to an update from the district. Lacure Elementary in Clio is also closed due to a power outage, according to the district. An incident was reported just after 9 a.m. after flooding at Lacure Elementary on the Genesee County dispatch active events page.

FLINT – Linden might have finished second in the Metro League softball standings but the Eagles led the all-league voting with six first-team selections. Third-place Clio had three first-team picks while league champion Owosso had two. Owosso won the league championship with a 21-1 record, Linden was second with a 20-2 mark and Clio tied Fenton for third place with a 15-6 record. White pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in juvenile court and will serve one year of juvenile probation. The opinion by the majority in the Appeals Court ruling was that the prosecutor’s request to move to dismiss charges and move the case to juvenile court was within the scope of Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office’s authority. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton previously said the case should have been decided two years ago. Payne earned his GED, participated in the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department’s IGNITE program and operates a lawn and landscaping business with his father. Jenna Schroeder and Natalie Sago made up two-thirds of the officiating crew that night. She started refereeing when she was 17 to make some extra money, but now it’s her dream job and she’s breaking down barriers. There are currently five full-time women as referees in the NBA and two others who are not on staff during this season. Schroeder said women empowering women and supporting each other is how to break into male-dominated worlds. “I want my daughter to think her mom is strong enough to break barriers and do whatever she has to do,” Schroeder said.

Annual Michigan Cannabis Cup festival returns to Clio this summer
CLIO, Mich. – High Times is bringing the annual Cannabis Cup to Clio in June. The event will be held June 8 and 9 at the Auto City Speedway. Because cannabis has been legalized in Michigan, anyone over the age of 21 can attend this year. The Cannabis Cup brings together people in the cannabis industry and crowns winners in different categories. In past events, competitions have been held for best booth, best glass, best product, best edible, best preroll and more.
