Michigan edges South Dakota in Sweet 16 thriller

WICHITA, Kan. – Michigan and South Dakota’s head coaches expected a physical, defensive battle heading Saturday’s Sweet 16 matchup. A missed second free throw went out of bounds off Michigan, giving South Dakota the ball with 7.5 seconds remaining. But Grace Larkins quickly ignited the raucous South Dakota crowd with back-to-back triples to give her team the lead for the rest of the half. DNR shares tips for avoiding ‘conflicts’ with coyotes

According to the DNR, coyotes are often more visible during their breeding season, which falls between January and March. Food sources, including smaller mammals like mice and rabbits, may entice the coyotes to become even more comfortable living around people. Michiganders can prevent potential conflicts with coyotes by practicing the following:- Remove potential attractants such as trash bins, bird feeders and pet food. - Take advantage of a coyote’s natural fear of humans and scare them off if you see them. According to the DNR, on private property where coyotes are doing or about to do damage, a property owner or designee can take coyotes year-round; a license or written permit is not needed.

Here’s what you should do if you see a coyote

What should I do if I see a coyote? According to the DNR, coyotes are rarely dangerous and are likely just looking for small animals to eat or feed their young. Here is what to do if a coyote comes close to you:Make loud noises (Yell at it, bang pots and pans, use an air horn)Make yourself look large (Put your arms up and out to look bigger)Be assertive with your toneMake eye contact (Let the coyote know that this is your space and it is not welcome)Surprise the coyote (Open an umbrella, or throw objects at it)If you’re seeing the same coyote repeatedly, you should use different methods each time you see the coyote. Where Red Wings stand among NHL’s offseason winners, losers

The Red Wings will still be at or near the NHL’s basement, but they improved in all areas. They also landed a first-round pick for Kasperi Kapanen. They rid themselves of Paul Stastny’s $6.5 million cap hit for 2020-21 and cleared out Nate Schmidt’s nearly $6 million cap hit for the next five seasons to make room for Pietrangelo. Michigan agency removes foxes, coyotes from unlicensed rehab

MICHIGAN – Officials removed a half-dozen red foxes, three coyotes and other animals from an unlicensed rehabilitation center in western Michigan where the owner’s 2-year-old granddaughter lost an arm after reaching into a pen that housed two wolf-dog hybrids. The agency said it learned in August that a girl had been bitten in July after putting her arm into a cage. Pearson, 59, said Saturday that Cullen told her in July that she could start taking in wildlife at Howling Timbers and that she was licensed. Pearson said the animals are not bred at Howling Timbers and that her organization collects them from inside and outside Michigan. The girl was rushed to a hospital where she underwent surgery on her right arm, Pearson added.

Reed City coach Scott Shankel said he fired himself probably four times Friday night. It was just one of those nights – a wild and crazy evening – during their football-game-turned-track-meet at Reed City. Reed City improves to 4-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division. Reed City attempted only three passes and did not complete any of them. “One, we didn’t tackle, so that helped them,” Van Essen said with a chuckle in a phone interview with MLive.

NHL strips Coyotes of 2 picks for violating combine policy

NEW YORK The NHL on Wednesday stripped the Arizona Coyotes of their 2020 second-round pick and 2021 first-round pick for violating the scouting combine policy by conducting physical tests of draft-eligible players. Losing these picks further handcuffs whoever takes over as Arizona's general manager. The Coyotes already didn't have a first-round pick this year after trading it to New Jersey for winger Taylor Hall, a pending free agent. We were advised today of the NHLs ruling regarding the allegations of physical fitness testing of draft prospects and respect the leagues ruling, the Coyotes said in a statement. The league said the club acknowledged at the outset of that hearing that it had violated policy by conducting its own physical testing on players.
