They’re a dance company known for their impressive skills and grace, and this weekend the Dance Theatre of Harlem is bringing its show to Detroit.

Occasionally, the best things in life really are free — especially if you’re a dance fan in New York, where some of the world’s best dancers are performing at a free festival under the stars.

The winter festivities continue along with some family-friendly fun.

For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the Michigan Opera Theater is returning to the Detroit Opera House by welcoming the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH).

Local dancers that missed the opportunity to get hands-on teachings last year will now have a chance to work with the troupe that broke down color barriers.

There, inspired by the example set by the National Basketball Association and entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, they're in a bubble until the end of the month — a coronavirus quarantine bubble. As with many artistic organizations, the pandemic has been difficult for the renowned dance company, founded by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook in 1969. “What’s been fabulous about this moment is the opportunity for people to learn about Dance Theater of Harlem and our very unique story, as well as our very unique approach to this art form of ballet," she said. “I want more and more and more and more people to watch this video and ... to fall in love with this beautiful company."
