The streets of Detroit were turned into a runway on Thursday evening as Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta hosted Salon 03, its S/S 2022 fashion show, at Detroit's Michigan Building Theatre. The theater-turned-parking garage hosted celebrities including Mary J. Blige, Kehlani, Detroit Pistons Cade Cunningham, Burna Boy, Lil' Kim, and more. Daniel Lee, creative director for Bottega Veneta, visited the city several years ago, and Salon 03 marks the first U.S. edition of the brand's Salon series, which has previously been hosted in London and Berlin. Only Native American on federal death row set to be executed

(AP Photo/Jonathan J. Cooper)CHICAGO The only Native American on federal death row is set to die Wednesday for the slayings of a 9-year-old and her grandmother nearly two decades ago, though many Navajos are hoping for last-minute intervention by President Donald Trump to halt the execution. The first three federal executions in 17 years went ahead in July after similar legal maneuvers failed. If Mitchells execution goes ahead as planned, it would happen on the third night of the GOP convention. There are currently 58 men and one woman on federal death row, many of whose executions have been pending for over 20 years. Several relatives had said they opposed Mitchell's execution.

Worker aiding federal execution prep has positive virus test

After the latest 17-year hiatus, the Trump administration wants to restart federal executions this month at the Terre Haute, prison. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy File)WASHINGTON The federal Bureau of Prisons said Sunday that a staff member involved in preparing for the first federal executions in nearly two decades has tested positive for coronavirus. The agency made the disclosure in court filings in response to lawsuits that have sought to halt executions scheduled to resume Monday. The staff member immediately left work and notified the bureau Saturday about the the positive test, according to the court filing. The disclosure comes as the Justice Department is fighting to proceed with the first federal execution since 2003.

Justice Dept. seeks to overturn order halting execution

A federal judge in Indiana on Friday, July, 10, 2020, halted the first federal execution planned in 17 years scheduled three days from now over COVID-19 concerns. (Dan Pierce/The Courier via AP, File)WASHINGTON The Justice Department filed an emergency motion with a federal appeals court on Saturday seeking to move forward with the first federal execution in nearly two decades. Daniel Lee, 47, had been scheduled to die by lethal injection on Monday at a federal prison in Indiana. The court order applies only to Lees execution and does not halt two other executions that are scheduled for later next week. The federal prisons system has struggled in recent months to stem the exploding coronavirus pandemic behind bars.

Judge halts 1st federal execution in 17 years, citing virus

A federal judge in Indiana on Friday halted the first federal execution planned in 17 years scheduled three days from now over COVID-19 concerns. Daniel Lee had been scheduled to die by lethal injection on Monday. The injunction delays the execution until there is no longer such an emergency. Lee, 47, of Yukon, Oklahoma, was convicted in Arkansas of the 1996 killings of gun dealer William Mueller, his wife, Nancy, and her 8-year-old daughter, Sarah Powell. The relatives of the victims had pleaded for years that Lee instead should receive the same life sentence as the ringleader in the deadly scheme.
