911 surcharge, new mental health millage headed to May ballot in Genesee County

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- Members of the county Board of Commissioners say they don’t like staging a countywide election in May, but a majority have agreed to ask voters to renew a 911 telephone surcharge and to consider a new millage to provide additional mental health services at that time. Commissioners voted 6-2 Wednesday, Jan. 27, to put the renewal of the 911 surcharge of $1.86 per line on the countywide ballot May 4 and voted 5-3 to add a new 0.94-mill property tax request from Genesee Health System to the ballot as well. Commissioners Shaun Shumaker, R-Fenton Twp., and Bryant Nolden, D-Flint, voted against the 911 ballot issue and Commissioner Meredith Davis, R-Flushing Twp., joined them in voting against the GHS millage request. The 911 surcharge supports emergency 911 service and raises about $7 million annually. The GHS millage would be assessed until 2030 and is expected to raise $9.5 million in the first year it is levied, according to information supplied to the county.

Op-ed: Taking Black executives to the next level and beyond

The 2020 presidential election was a tight contest that painted a vivid picture highlighting our country's division along racial lines. One would be ignorant to believe that these sentiments do not bleed over into corporate America and the business world at large. It was invigorating to hear both the president-elect and vice president-elect acknowledge the power of the voice of Black voters. In this post-election atmosphere, where Black Americans are left contemplating how we move forward, we must continue to press on toward fostering Black excellence in corporate America by building the talent pipeline of the current and next generation of Black leaders. They too need to remain focused on developing and retaining high potential Black talent, promoting deserving role models so that everyone knows what is possible.

The election is less than a week away, which means another round of stimulus may take months to materialize. After confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced that the Senate would be recessed until Nov 9.
