More than 280 million tires are discarded each year in the United States, and some are getting a second life on Michigan roads in an effort to reduce cracking and future potholes.

A high-pressure gas release was mistaken for an explosion in Washtenaw County. Residents are advised to avoid the area.

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security issued a UM EAlert at 5:35 p.m. advising people to avoid the area due to the gas leak.
