Eastbound I-94 temporarily slims to one lane Friday
JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- Michigan Department of Transportation crews will temporarily shift a stretch of eastbound I-94 traffic onto the shoulder beginning Friday. Crews will close the right lane of the highway from Airport Road to Elm Avenue and shift the traffic onto the shoulder beginning at 9 p.m. April 23. As part of the shift, eastbound ramps will be closed at Airport Road, West Avenue and Cooper Avenue, they said. Once complete, the interstate will have a minimum of three lanes in each direction between West Avenue and U.S.127 South, MDOT officials previously said.

The redone West Avenue interchange will become a “diverging diamond,” where drivers temporarily cross to the left side of the road when they are under the bridge. MDOT is the largest funder of the $78-million project, which includes a new bridge over West Avenue. The City of Jackson is expected to contribute $539,200 for landscaping work at the roundabout south of I-94 and lighted sign installation and sidewalk work along West Avenue.

Six people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a multiple-vehicle, chain-reaction accident on I-75 near the Elm Avenue exit Friday afternoon. The Monroe Police Department reported six vehicles were involved in the crash on the southbound side around 12:30 p.m. Police said of the six people who reported injuries, three were transported to area hospitals. Based on the officers' investigation, it is believed that a separate, non-contact vehicle had lost part of its load on the freeway and the driver of another non-contact vehicle stopped to pick it up.
