2023 Senior Bowl: 10 offensive players that fit Detroit Lions’ draft needs

But there are needs at offensive guard, running back and tight end, while another depth receiver wouldn’t hurt. Last but not least on the needs list is the tight end position. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end caught 56 passes for 560 yards and eight touchdowns this past season. But that shouldn’t scare people away from the 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end. Latu is the type of late-round prospect that could fit how this team wants to attack the tight end room.

Instant observations: Lions use stunning 51-yard TD pass to keep playoff hopes alive

New York called timeout with 1 second left, and had one final look at a 58-yard field goal. Wright did a great job selling the block, before leaking out for a short pass from Goff. Detroit settled for a field goal, a huge difference in a game so close. That set up a field goal that broke a 10-all halftime tie. There’s nothing about that sequence that was good, and the Lions had to settle for a go-ahead field goal that made it 10-7.

Aidan Hutchinson (illness) active for Lions; Jets star Quinnen Williams ruled out

That includes star rookie pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who missed practice on Thursday, and running back/kick returner Justin Jackson, who was downgraded to questionable over the weekend. Defensive lineman Michael Brockers is the only player missing the game due to illness, and he was benched weeks ago anyway. The rest of the inactives: Guard Kayode Awosika (ankle), linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee), running back Craig Reynolds (knee), quarterback Josh Dobbs, guard Ross Pierschbascher and defensive lineman Austin Bryant. The same cannot be said of the New York Jets, who have scratched star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams because of a calf injury. New York is also playing without top quarterback Mike White, who was ruled out on Friday because of a rib injury.

Lions list prized rookie Aidan Hutchinson as questionable to play against Jets

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have listed prized rookie defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (illness) as questionable to play against the New York Jets in Week 15. Hutchinson, who leads all rookies with seven sacks and 39 pressures, was back at practice to end the week. He’s missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Related: Aidan Hutchinson returns to Detroit Lions practice after bout with illnessRelated: Detroit Lions’ postseason dreams boosted by Seahawks loss: ‘That was nice’The Lions ruled offensive guard Kayode Awosika (ankle) and linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee) out for Sunday’s game in New Jersey. Veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers, who hasn’t played since Week 4, is doubtful with an ankle injury.

Lions cancel practice in favor of walk-through, look healthy on injury report

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have been riding high lately, there’s no question about that. Now Dan Campbell is backing off the gas, canceling practice on Wednesday in an effort to keep his team fresh for the final month of the season. The Lions (6-7) pulled away from Minnesota in a physical game over the weekend, their fifth win in six weeks. “We just felt like this is the right time to cycle down this week,” Campbell said. It’ll be a little extended (Thursday), and really push the intensity.”The good news is the Lions look healthy on the estimated practice report that was mandated by the league.

Lions’ red-hot defense officially getting back former sack leader Romeo Okwara

These are good days for the Detroit Lions’ long-lost pass rush -- and now they’re getting back their two-time sack leader too. Romeo Okwara has officially been cleared to suit up for the showdown against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Ford Field. They believed in Okwara, and wanted to build Detroit’s pass rush around him for the long term. Detroit is getting healthy for that push too, although did lose starting slot cornerback Will Harris to a mid-week hip injury. Mike Hughes is expected to replace Harris in the slot, while Jeff Okudah is active on the outside as expected.

Lions list 2 cornerbacks as questionable to play against Justin Jefferson, Vikings

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have listed two starting cornerbacks as questionable for their game on Sunday against Justin Jefferson, the second-leading receiver in the NFL, and the Minnesota Vikings. Jeff Okudah was listed as questionable because of an illness that knocked him out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday, although he did return to practice on Friday and is trending toward playing. Receiver Kalif Raymond (illness) and backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld (illness) are also questionable, while guard Evan Brown (ankle) is doubtful. Linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee), guard Kayode Awosika (ankle) and cornerback Chase Lucas (hamstring) have already been ruled out. The good news is pass rusher Romeo Okwara is expected to make his season debut against Minnesota.

Jeff Okudah among 3 Lions players knocked out by illness

ALLEN PARK -- There’s something going around the Lions locker room. No, not playoff fever. Cornerback Jeff Okudah, receiver Kalif Raymond and quarterback Nate Sudfeld all showed up on the injury report because of illnesses that knocked them out of Wednesday’s practice. Left tackle Taylor Decker (elbow), linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee), safety DeShon Elliott (ankle) and center Frank Ragnow (foot) also did not practice, while running back D’Andre Swift (ankle) and guard Evan Brown (ankle) were limited.

The Lions are winning, healthy, and expected to get even healthier vs Vikings

They’re also finally getting healthy. When they continue their playoff push next week against the division-leading Minnesota Vikings, they should be even healthier yet with the anticipated return of pass rusher Romeo Okwara. “It’s very nice (to finally get healthy),” head coach Dan Campbell said after the 40-14 win against Jacksonville. Look man, I like this team.”The Lions have welcomed back players like receiver DJ Chark, receiver Josh Reynolds, receiver Jameson Williams, cornerback Jeff Okudah, guard Jonah Jackson and pass rusher Josh Paschal in recent weeks. But he went down before he really got going last year, rupturing his Achilles in a Week 4 game in Chicago.

Lions file best injury report of year, ruling out only Julian Okwara, Evan Brown

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have ruled out edge rusher Julian Okwara and interior offensive lineman Evan Brown for their game on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Simply put, this is the best injury report of the season for one of the league’s most oft-injured teams. Cornerback Jeff Okudah (brain), guard Jonah Jackson (brain) and pass rusher Josh Paschal (knee) have all been officially cleared to return against Jacksonville. The only mystery heading into the weekend is whether the Lions will activate receiver Jameson Williams and/or edge rusher Romeo Okwara from injured lists. Romeo Okwara has a better chance to play against Jacksonville after getting in a couple weeks of practice in his return from an Achilles injury.

Lions getting healthy as they mount long-shot playoff bid

Cornerback Jeff Okudah, guard Jonah Jackson and defensive lineman Josh Paschal all likely will make their returns from injury against Jacksonville. As long as there’s no symptoms or anything, they’re good. He’s had a good week.”With that, the only players on the 53-man roster not expected to play are guard Evan Brown (ankle) and pass rusher Julian Okwara (elbow). Of course, there are a bunch of players on injured lists, including receiver Jameson Williams and pass rusher Romeo Okwara. On the offensive side, Jackson’s return will help solidify an offensive line that continues to be shorthanded.

Detroit Lions without both starting guards, 3 key defenders for Thanksgiving

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions will be without their starting offensive guards -- top four overall -- and key defenders Charles Harris (groin), Jeff Okudah (concussion protocol) and Josh Paschal (knee) on Thanksgiving. The Lions are already without guards Halapoulivaati Vaitai (back) and Tommy Kraemer (back), so things are tough on the interior of their stout offensive line. Awosika has logged eight offensive snaps since landing in Detroit. Skipper has allowed 16 pressures and two sacks across 289 offensive snaps. Awosika hasn’t seen much action, with eight offensive snaps, including one as an extra tight end on the season.

Lions without all 3 interior offensive linemen as they kick off Thanksgiving week

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions’ offensive line is in rough shape heading into the short week. Center Frank Ragnow (toe) and guards Evan Brown (ankle) and Jonah Jackson (illness) were all listed as “out” on an estimated injury report that was issued Monday. Detroit did not actually practice, but had to file a report anyway with the Thanksgiving matchup against Buffalo looming just three days away. Cornerback Jeff Okuidah (brain), defensive end Charles Harris (groin), pass rusher Josh Paschal (knee) and receiver Josh Reynolds (back) also were “out” according to the report. Whether he’s close enough to actually make it back on the short week remains very much to be seen.

Snap counts, PFF grades: Detroit’s offensive line draws rave reviews in Week 10

It’s an interesting review of the team’s work in their second-straight win. He allowed only one pressure across 62 snaps in Chicago. While guard Evan Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell are at the bottom of the offensive line rankings for the week. Kerby Joseph, one game removed from being named NFC defensive player of the week, is the team’s lowest-graded defender. The linebacker-turned-fullback logged 13 snaps in his first game back.

Last-place Lions looking into ‘anything and everything’ before trade deadline

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions enter Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline losers of five straight games, sitting at 1-6 and well out of contention in the NFC playoff picture. Mine is to make the most of what we got here, which is plenty to compete with, I believe.”“Yeah, I don’t know,” Campbell said. “I know (general manager) Brad (Holmes) is looking into anything and everything on both sides. T.J. Hockenson’s name has been popular in the trade deadline rumor mill. Running back Jamaal Williams, offensive lineman Evan Brown, defensive end John Cominsky, linebackers Alex Anzalone and cornerback Amani Oruwariye, among others, are unrestricted free agents after this season.

Snap counts, PFF grades: Lions CB Jeff Okudah has worst-graded game of season

Pro Football Focus didn’t come down too hard on the Lions, with cornerback Jeff Okudah standing as one of those exceptions. Jonah Jackson was back in the starting lineup, logging all 66 reps at the other guard spot. The returning guard and Brown were docked for the team’s worst pass-blocking marks. -- Prized rookie defensive end Aidan Hutchinson received strong marks despite creating only one pressure and whiffing on another should-be sack. Defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor, cornerback Bobby Price and veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers received the worst grades on the defense from PFF.

Lions down 8 offensive players at practice; K Austin Seibert, OL Jonah Jackson return

ALLEN PARK -- Dan Campbell said the Detroit Lions would be short-handed on offense at Wednesday’s practice, and the second-year head coach wasn’t kidding. “Chark feels a little bit better today. Swift is a little bit better. I would say everybody is a little bit better. St. Brown is a little bit better.

Recently cut Lions offensive lineman awarded to Cleveland Browns via waivers

ALLEN PARK -- Drew Forbes, an offensive guard the Detroit Lions claimed after losing starter Halapoulivaati Vaitai, is heading back to the Cleveland Browns via waivers. Forbes was claimed from the Browns after Vaitai landed on injured reserve with his back injury. He appeared in one game for the Lions, logging five snaps on special teams in the season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Detroit released Forbes and tight end Shane Zylstra ahead of last week’s game to make room for offensive tackle Dan Skipper and kicker Dominik Eberle. Awosika logged seven offensive snaps last week against the Seahawks after Evan Brown rolled his ankle.

Lions expect Josh Paschal back at practice, while Levi Onwuzurike’s return remains murky

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions could see second-round rookie defensive lineman Josh Paschal make his debut in practice this week. They are also expected to get cornerback Jerry Jacobs at practice this week, starting both defender’s clock to return from reserve lists. And while that’s the good news concerning the team’s second-round defensive linemen, head coach Dan Campbell offered a grim update on Levi Onwuzurike’s recovery. The team’s defensive coaching staff had high hopes for Onwuzurike’s second season. The Lions were hopeful to see Onwuzurike back in action sometime in the early weeks of this season.

Instant observations: The honeymoon for Aaron Glenn is over after Lions’ 48-45 loss

Smith had just 15 rushing yards on the season, but wasn’t even touched while waltzing into the end zone. Hockenson punched back, catching a 4-yard touchdown pass that closed Detroit to within 41-38 late in the fourth quarter. Hockenson didn’t go down until he was 81 yards downfield, a career long, and it could not possibly have come at a more opportune time. But the Lions didn’t lose because of it. That forced the Lions to finish the game with two guards who opened the season on practice squads, Dan Skipper and Kayode Awosika

Snap counts, PFF grades: Lions’ Alim McNeill flashes pass-rush chops with increased role

The Detroit Lions have talked about finding new ways to use interior defender Alim McNeill, especially after adding beef to the rotation in Isaiah Buggs and Benito Jones. McNeill saw an increase in snaps during Detroit’s 28-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Aidan Hutchinson’s snaps dipped while dealing with his thigh/quad injury, with the prized rookie still seeing 79% of the defensive work. Jones played 13 snaps while Buggs handled much of the work inside with McNeill moving around. The Lions averaged 4 yards per carry and didn’t allow a sack, while Jared Goff ate only two hits.

Lions’ Taylor Decker makes instilling confidence a priority for makeshift O-line

And veteran left tackle Taylor Decker has made instilling confidence through the bumps in the road a top priority. Last week, Decker told MLive the story of the offensive line sticking up for Logan Stenberg in the huddle after the guard committed consecutive penalties in the season opener. But Decker said he and other offensive linemen, “we’re like, ‘no, you leave him alone. He was joined by center Evan Brown and tackle-turned-makeshift guard Dan Skipper in the starting lineup in the team’s Week 2 win over the Washington Commanders. “I think it’s really big to instill confidence in those guys going in the game.

D’Andre Swift returns to practice, while bad luck continues to crush Detroit Lions’ offensive line

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions opened Week 1 with one of the best offensive lines in the league. Jackson hurt his right ring finger at practice on Wednesday, becoming the second offensive linemen to go down because of an injury he suffered in practice. At this point, Ragnow faces long odds of playing against Washington, although Detroit has not yet ruled him out. If Jackson also can’t go against Washington, Detroit would have to reach even deeper onto its bench, perhaps starting Kayode Awosika, who was signed off Philadelphia’s practice squad this week. D’Andre Swift racked up 144 yards on the ground against Philadelphia and accounted for 175 yards overall, both career highs.

Pittsburgh Steelers releasing ex-Lions offensive lineman after short stint

McCollum appeared in 13 games while earning one start at center for the Lions in 2021. But the team’s interior offensive line was pretty set this time, with the return of Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow and the re-signing of steady backup Evan Brown. Snap counts: Lions get starters some run while taking close look at bubble players

The Detroit Lions needed to get most of their starters some run while taking one last look at bubble players in the preseason finale. And while it wasn’t that group’s best showing, it’s still an optimism-inducing sight to see those five together. Stenberg did himself a favor with strong showings in consecutive weeks while riding the roster bubble. Jackson was solid enough, with two attempts for 53 yards. Jermar Jefferson had a tough day, with six carries for 28 yards (with a long run of 27 yards).

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions had seven players land on the COVID list last week, and at one point, were without 21 players at practice as a flu outbreak spread. The team is opening the week away from the practice facility, focusing on remote work in a precautionary move. “We’re just trying to be as smart as we can, as diligent as we can be about this whole thing. Williams and Walker landed there Friday afternoon, with Melifonwu, Beckett and Gilbert’s designation happening over the weekend. Brown was the first to land on the list last week and was followed by Price, representing the largest COVID outbreak for the team since the start of the pandemic.

Detroit Lions move 7th player to COVID list, add a whole bunch of practice-squaders to roster

DENVER -- The COVID outbreak isn’t over yet. The Detroit Lions moved linebacker Tavante Beckett to the COVID list on Saturday afternoon, the seventh player to land on the list this week. That makes this the largest COVID outbreak since the start of the pandemic for Detroit. Another 12 players are questionable, which means 43% of the roster -- nearly half -- either will not play in Denver or will do so banged up. Considering the roster wasn’t all that good to begin with, the Lions figure to field a team that is barely recognizable on Sunday.

Detroit Lions add 2 defensive backs to COVID list, bringing total to 6 cases for the week

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions added cornerbacks Mark Gilbert and Ifeatu Melifonwu to the COVID reserve list, bringing the total to six cases on the week. Gilbert and Melifonwu join center Evan Brown, safety Tracy Walker, running back Jamaal Williams and cornerback Bobby Price on the COVID list. They have cornerbacks Corey Ballentine, Parnell Motley and Nickell Robey-Coleman on the practice squad, with a handful of moves expected Saturday afternoon. Walker landing on the COVID list could lead to even more shuffling by necessity in the defensive backfield. It’s also looking bare in the offensive backfield, with Swift and Williams down, not to mention in the defensive trenches.

Detroit Lions at Denver Broncos: Matchups to watch, key questions heading into Week 14

The Detroit Lions (1-10-1) are on the road after their first win of the season, drawing the Denver Broncos (6-6) in Week 14 action. On the bright side, Jared Goff got it clicking with receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Josh Reynolds and tight end Brock Wright in last week’s win. Detroit’s secondary has shown flashes, with Amani Oruwariye’s five interceptions and the gradual growth from undrafted rookie Jerry Jacobs. The Lions have worked Cabinda with the tight end room some, with Nick Eubanks and Shane Zylstra on the practice squad. Zylstra converted from wide receiver to tight end while with the Vikings in camp.

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have placed running back Jamaal Williams and safety Tracy Walker on the COVID reserve list. They also officially ruled out running back D’Andre Swift (shoulder) and listed tight end T.J. Hockenson (hand) as doubtful. Williams handled the bulk of the work with Swift missing the team’s game last week, running 17 times for 71 yards in the win. “It’s, we kind have talked about this, it’s the versatility,” Lions tight end coach Ben Johnson said of Cabinda. For a big tight end, er fullback, you just don’t see much of that.

QB Jared Goff back at Detroit Lions practice as team continues to play it safe with illness issues

ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was spotted at Thursday’s practice after missing the week’s first session due to the flu. Goff wasn’t the only player feeling down with the sickness, with the team splitting practices to try and limit the spread in Allen Park. Defensive lineman Michael Brockers, offensive guard Jonah Jackson, defensive lineman John Penisini, offensive guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai and defensive lineman Nick Williams were listed as out with an illness to open the week. Goff’s return is certainly welcomed, with the quarterback fresh off his best performance since landing in Detroit, earning NFC offensive player of the week honors to boot.
