Simpson, a point guard, appeared in 47 games with the franchise’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, this past season. In October, he signed a contract with the Thunder only to get waived and sent to the G League team. Oklahoma City, at 23-55, has the second-worst record in the Western Conference.

The two teams tapped DJ Bakker as the first head coach of the incoming team. He’s served as an assistant and player development coach under Dwane Casey for the last three seasons and as the Pistons summer league head coach in 2019. He and the Pistons’ front office ultimately decided that Bakker was the best fit because of his long history with Casey. That means Casey, Weaver and Murphy, who was recently promoted to senior director of player personnel for the Pistons, will collaborate with Bakker on players’ needs.

As part of the hybrid partnership, the Nuggets will control the Drive’s basketball operations and existing local ownership in Grand Rapids. Only Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers remain as the two NBA teams without a G League affiliate.

On Wednesday, Caris LeVert was traded from the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets to the Indiana Pacers as part of the reported four-team deal that sent former league MVP James Harden from Houston to Brooklyn. Two members of last year’s Michigan team who went undrafted have joined G League teams. Zavier Simpson was chosen by the Oklahoma City Blue with the seventh pick in Monday’s G League draft.
