Julio Teheran, his season officially over, is latest example of how hard it is to find free-agent starters
What happened next was frustratingly familiar for the Tigers: Teheran made exactly one start before coming down with a shoulder injury. The Tigers will almost certainly be back in that same market yet again this winter, looking to add at least one free-agent pitcher. Five prominent free-agent starters signed for about that amount last winter:The Blue Jays scored big this year with lefty Robbie Ray, a Cy Young candidate in 2021. Of course, developing your own starters is often cheaper and more valuable than scouring the free-agent market. Or maybe we’ll be writing about the latest free-agent starter that didn’t pan out at this time next year.mlive.com
Where are they in 2021? A look back at Tigers’ Opening Day roster last season.
DETROIT -- Most of the players who made up last year’s Opening Day roster are still in the Detroit Tigers’ organization, although a good chunk of them are no longer in the big leagues. That’s probably good news, although it’s worth remembering that last year’s “Opening Day” was only eight months ago and the expanded roster included 30 players, not the current 26. In any case, the Tigers are still doing better than last year, when more than half of their 2019 Opening Day roster was no longer under contract to any big-league club by the time the 2020 season finally started. Tigers welcome back fans, win Grapefruit League opener
Having fans in the stands -- even just 2,000 of them in socially distanced pods -- made the Tigers’ first game of spring so much sweeter. (At least the Tigers’ fans). Tigers starter Tyler Alexander gave up a couple of runs in two innings, including a home run to Adam Haseley on the second pitch of the game. “The best way to get back to normalcy is to have fans in the stands for the game. Even in a small spring training game, with limited capacity, you could feel a tangible difference.”mlive.com
Play ball! Here’s the Tigers’ first lineup of 2021 spring training
LAKELAND, Fla. -- It’s not exactly a preview of the real Opening Day, but at least it’s a lineup for a real baseball game. Hinch unveiled his first lineup for the first game of the Grapefruit League on Sunday. It does not include Miguel Cabrera, who will be eased into action and it includes at least three players who are unlikely to make the Opening Day roster let alone be in the Opening Day lineup. Tigers’ first game is Sunday -- and fans will be here to see it
LAKELAND, Fla. -- For the first time in 353 days, the Detroit Tigers will play a game in front of real fans instead of cardboard cutouts. The Tigers open the Grapefruit League season on Sunday at 1 p.m. with an exhibition game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. The last time the Tigers played in front of real fans was on March, 12, 2020. The game will not be televised, although Dan Dickerson will be in town to call the game on the radio. Michael Fulmer had been scheduled to start that game, but he returned home to Oklahoma after his wife gave birth to their second child on Friday.mlive.com
Ex-Tigers first baseman settles for minor-league deal with Rockies
Cron, whose 2020 season with the Detroit Tigers was ended prematurely by a knee injury, has signed a minor-league deal with the Colorado Rockies. The Tigers signed former Baltimore Orioles first baseman Renato Nunez to a minor-league deal two weeks ago, effectively ending any chance of a reunion with Cron. Cron signed a one-year, $6.1 million contract with the Tigers prior to the 2020 season but was forced to settle for a minor-league deal in what has been a chilly free-agent market, especially for mid-tier players. Cron is the last of five Tigers’ Major League free agents to sign a deal. Catcher Austin Romine signed a big-league deal with the Chicago Cubs, while right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova signed a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and Jordan Zimmermann signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.mlive.com

The free agent pitcher signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The Tigers signed Nova to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million last January, hoping he could serve as a reliable innings-eating. Nova is the second of five Tigers’ free agents to find a new home. Cron, second baseman Jonathan Schoop and pitcher Jordan Zimmermann remain unsigned. Catcher Austin Romine recently signed a big-league deal with the Chicago Cubs.mlive.com

Detroit Tigers reveal final 30-man roster for Opening Day
DETROIT The Detroit Tigers revealed their final 30-man Opening Day roster for the 2020 season Thursday, just hours before the noon deadline. The Tigers had most of their roster figured out before the second round of spring training began, but there was still competition for the final bullpen and reserve spots. They had on-and-off moments throughout summer camp, and the Tigers could have gone with higher upside choices such as Shao-Ching Chiang or Nolan Blackwood. MORE: Did we see the Tigers Opening Day lineup on Tuesday? Greiner, Lugo and Mercer earned the final three spots over more exciting options such as Willi Castro and Derek Hill.

Predicting the full Detroit Tigers 30-man roster one week before the season begins
DETROIT It almost doesnt seem real, but one week from Friday is the start of what could be the strangest Detroit Tigers season ever. Roster makeupPredicting the roster for a team like the Tigers -- with so many unproven players fighting for jobs -- is tricky even in a normal year. READ: Here are the players included on the Detroit Tigers spring training rosterMLB expanded rosters by one spot before the pandemic, allowing teams to carry 26 players. He gave up way too many runs, but hes looked better in both spring training segments. Reyes was much better than Stewart during spring training in March, when the latter struggled to make any solid contact.
Here are the 58 players included on the Detroit Tigers spring training roster
DETROIT The Detroit Tigers have released their initial Club Player Pool, including 58 players who can participate in spring training. Schwindel was one of the nice success stories of spring training in March. Willi Castro could benefit from the extra roster spots, but Lugo feels like someone who could still end up on the outside looking in. ProspectsThese are the players Tigers fans are most anxious to see, and for good reason. Dingler made the cut just weeks after being the teams second-round draft pick, but hell likely just get some work in Toledo.
