Urban Meyer ‘deep in negotiations’ for new football job
Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is “deep in negotiations” on returning to FOX Sports, according to The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch. Meyer, a three-time national champion, left the TV set of FOX’s college football pregame show last year to run the Jaguars. Meyer also had a 10-month broadcasting tenure at ESPN in 2011 which ended when he took the Ohio State job. Last month on the The Tim May Podcast, Meyer said a return to FOX Sports and Big Noon Kickoff was in the works. Not being the kind of ripping people to shreds but just celebrating this incredible game, and most importantly, the players that do this game.

mlive.com2022 NFL draft: Why I mocked Oregon pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux to the Detroit Lions
It’s been a smoke-filled, weird ride for Oregon pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux through this year’s NFL draft process. First things, the answer to the question of “why I mocked Kayvon Thibodeaux” to the Detroit Lions is that I’m not sold on the Travon Walker No. Related: Ben Raven’s final 2022 NFL mock draft: Detroit Lions get electric pass rusher, mean wideoutJacksonville’s apparent shift from Hutchinson to Walker has been all the talk among NFL insiders in the days leading into the draft. A game-breaking pass rusher can help solve some of those issues while making life easier for the defensive backs. Detroit’s defense hasn’t had a high-level pass rusher in some time.
mlive.comKyle Meinke’s final 2022 NFL mock draft: Detroit Lions supercharge defense with pass rusher, safety
If true, the Lions can hop into a gondola at the Bellagio and run their selection to Roger Goodell right now. Hutchinson is probably the safest pick of them all, and especially for where the Lions is at right now in this rebuild. Cincinnati, on the other hand, can’t afford to leave this draft without material upgrades in its protection for Joe Burrow. Linebacker is a big need, but then again, so is safety, where the Lions have Tracy Walker and not much else. He’s long, he’s fast, he hits hard, and he can play all over the defense.
mlive.comJaguars trying to become 1st to nail back-to-back top picks
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke turned toward coach Doug Pederson, smiled widely and said, “I’m pretty confident this will be the last time that I’ll be making the first pick.” No team or general manager in the NFL’s modern era (since 1970) has drafted No. 1 in three straight years. Tampa Bay would have done it as a fledgling expansion franchise in 1976-78, but the Buccaneers traded the top pick in 1978 to Houston.

More: Aidan Hutchinson visits Jaguars; still projected to go No. “This draft happens to be a good draft for that,” Baalke told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine. Wrote Miller: “If (the Jaguars) take Walker or a lineman, you have to think the Lions would pounce on Hutchinson and keep him in the state.”
mlive.comUrban Meyer lines up new job after being booted by Jacksonville Jaguars
Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has a bead on a new job. Tuesday on the The Tim May Podcast, Meyer said a return to FOX Sports and Big Noon Kickoff is in the works. Meyer, a three-time national champion, left the TV set of FOX’s college football pregame show last year to run the Jaguars. At the time, Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell took over as interim head coach. In February, Jacksonville hired former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson.
mlive.comAidan Hutchinson visits Jaguars; still projected to go No. 1 in NFL draft
Three weeks before the NFL draft gets underway, Aidan Hutchinson is still the best bet to go No. On Tuesday, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay unveiled his latest mock draft and, sure enough, there was Hutchinson going first. “Hutchinson would instantly provide the Jaguars with a relentless, explosive disrupter on the edge opposite Josh Allen.”More: Jaguars aim to ‘go big’ in NFL draft. McShay follows fellow ESPN colleague Mel Kiper, who just two weeks ago projected Hutchinson to the Jaguars at No. 34 to the Detroit Lions in McShay’s new mock draft, although “Hill probably belongs in the first round,” he writes.
mlive.comESPN’s Todd McShay gets Detroit Lions a disruptor, quarterback and safety in 2-round mock draft
ESPN’s Todd McShay doesn’t think the Detroit Lions should take a quarterback at Pick 2. McShay has Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson to the Jacksonville Jaguars to get things started, then sent Georgia’s Travon Walker to Detroit. McShay then sends Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder to the Lions at Pick 32. McShay then sends Michigan defensive back Daxton Hill to Detroit at Pick 34 at the top of Round 2. “Hill probably belongs in the first round, but the Lions get lucky with the smooth, speedy safety on Day 2,” McShay writes.
mlive.comCould the Detroit Lions really become the first team ever to use a top-2 NFL draft pick on a safety?
PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Detroit Lions already matched the NFL record for highest NFL draft pick ever spent on a cornerback. Could they really match the NFL record for highest NFL draft pick ever spent on a safety just two years later? Some believe Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton could make some sense, even though only one team has ever taken a safety that highly in the draft. He is one of the best players in this draft, and at a position of major need for the Detroit Lions. That’s why I think they’re all what you call premium positions.
mlive.comAidan Hutchinson could still be in play for Lions after all, as Jaguars insist they’re not done on offensive line
And with that, Hutchinson replaced offensive tackles like Evan Neal and Ickey Ekwonu as the favorite to go first overall. But Jacksonville is insisting its free-agency moves do not impact the club’s draft plan, and will not take them out of adding another offensive linemen. To that end, the Jaguars could still add a blue-chip pass protector at the top of the draft. You can never have enough offensive linemen in the NFL.”If Pederson is telling the truth, it would be music to the Lions’ ears. Then again, with the Jaguars now less than a month away from officially being on the clock, we’re in peak smoke-screen season.
mlive.comWhat’s being said nationally after NFL’s busy, trade-filled first week of free agency
Blockbuster trades have dominated the first week of NFL free agency, paired with the quarterback carousel and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Aaron Rodgers opened the week by announcing his intentions to return for the Green Bay Packers in 2022. The reigning back-to-back MVP will make $150 million over three years. The Packers then traded star receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders for Picks 22 and 53 in this year’s draft. Adams then inked a five-year, $141.25 million with his new team.

mlive.comJags tag Robinson again, clear path for pass rusher at No. 1
The Jacksonville Jaguars used their franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson for the second straight year Tuesday, guaranteeing him $16.6 million in 2022 and potentially divulging their plans for the No. 1 pick in next month's NFL draft. The former Alabama standout has started 61 games over five seasons since Jacksonville drafted him with the 34th overall pick in 2017. Bringing him back was a surprise move considering the Jaguars drafted Stanford left tackle Walker Little with the 45th overall pick last year and had plans to pair him with quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the foreseeable future.

But with Hutchinson on the board, and considered the top overall prospect by some, it will hard not to consider him. I think it’s a huge benefit to be here.”Up to this point, most of the NFL has only watched Hutchinson on film. Michigan’s star defensive end bypassed the Senior Bowl, opting to instead begin the draft process out west. Do they go the route of protection for Lawrence and draft an offensive tackle, like some mock boards are suggesting, or Hutchinson?
mlive.comDenard Robinson to join Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan
Robinson is expected to become the Wolverines’ assistant director of player personnel, MLive has learned, confirming a Wednesday afternoon report by Anthony Wright of On3.com. Michigan has not yet announced the hire, but the 31-year-old Robinson would likely work in tandem with veteran NFL executive Tom Gamble, who returned to the program earlier this month as director of player personnel. Harbaugh has slowly beefed up his support staff in recent years, adding additional positions focused on player personnel and recruiting to help manage relaxed rules pertaining to student-athlete transfer eligibility and Name, Image and Likeness. Osborn was reportedly planning to take a job as defensive line coach at the University of Connecticut back in December, but the new role came up once Macdonald departed Michigan. ... When the Lions moved on from Caldwell, they were looking to take a team on the cusp into the next level. When Caldwell took over in 2014, he inherited a team that had won just 11 games the previous two seasons combined. But nevertheless, what it boils down to is being able to lead a team, and not everybody can do that.
mlive.comSpokesman: Jaguars owner waited after deciding to fire Meyer
The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to set the record straight about owner Shad Khan's firing of embattled coach Urban Meyer. A spokesman for Khan told The Associated Press on Friday night that the decision to move on from Meyer was made following Jacksonville's 20-0 loss at Tennessee on Sunday. A conversation Khan and Meyer had in the locker room after that shutout — Meyer had few answers for the team's woes or how he planned to fix them — sealed a decision Khan had been mulling for weeks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars moved quickly to rid themselves of some of Urban Meyer’s non-traditional methods Thursday. There was no longer a motivational team huddle on the practice field. news.yahoo.comDeja vu: Ex-Lions interim head coach Darrell Bevell takes over Jaguars amid Urban Meyer firing
ALLEN PARK -- Darrell Bevell has taken over in December after the firing of his toxic head coach. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced at 12:51 a.m. Thursday they were dismissing embattled head coach Urban Meyer after less than one season, and replacing him with, who else, the former Detroit Lions interim head coach. Bevell joined the Lions as offensive coordinator last year, then was promoted to interim head coach when Matt Patricia was fired after another embarrassment on Thanksgiving. He was chosen for the gig because he was viewed as players’ coach who was both liked and respected in the locker room. “I’m the head ball coach,” Meyer reportedly told Lambo.

Meyer's tumultuous tenure ended after just 13 games — and two victories — when the Jacksonville Jaguars fired him early Thursday because of an accumulation of missteps. Owner Shad Khan made the move hours after former Jaguars player Josh Lambo told a Florida newspaper Meyer kicked him during practice in August. It was the latest black eye — adding to an already lengthy list of embarrassments — for the three-time national championship-winning college coach who failed miserably to make the transition to the NFL.
