Detroit Lions now have room to sign entire UDFA class after cutting 8 players this week
ALLEN PARK -- Expect the Detroit Lions to officially announce their undrafted free agent class imminently, after cutting safety Jalen Elliott and receiver Javon McKinley on Thursday morning. That makes eight cuts this week, and 11 open spots on the roster overall, just enough to squeeze in their UDFA class for the start of rookie minicamp on Friday. Receiver Kalil Pimpleton, who scored four different ways at Central Michigan -- including throwing the ball and returning punts -- is among the most interesting signings expected to be announced. Others include Michigan State OL Kevin Jarvis, Appalachian State defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor, TCU offensive tackle Obinna Eze, San Diego State running back Greg Bell, Appalachian State receiver Corey Sutton, Miami (Ohio) defensive back Cedric Boswell, Ferris State offensive lineman Zein Obeid, San Jose State tight end Derrick Deese Jr., Southeastern Louisiana tight end Nolan Givan and Tulsa receiver Josh Johnson.
mlive.comDetroit Lions tender 13 exclusive-rights free agents, including record-setting punter Jack Fox
The record-setting punter was among 13 exclusive-rights free agents who were tendered by the Lions on Wednesday afternoon. If any of the players practice well enough to make the team, cool, Detroit is better off for it. And if any of them isn’t good enough to make the team, the Lions can move on without financial penalty. Offensive lineman Ryan McCollum and defensive back Jalen Elliott were the only exclusive-rights free agents Detroit did not tender. Wright was pressed into starting duty as an undrafted rookie because of all the injuries at tight end, and caught two touchdown passes.
mlive.comNow the Lions have lost a 10th defensive back. Aaron Glenn has never seen anything like it.
About an hour later, Glenn lost a 10th defensive back when Jalen Elliott was moved to the COVID list. Now Robey-Coleman and Ballentine are on the COVID list too. Now Elliott has joined them with his third trip to the COVID list -- yes, third -- since the start of the pandemic. The Lions turned in the worst defensive season in franchise history last year, and allowed the second-most points in the history of the game. “But again, honestly -- and I’m being honest with you -- I think about the next player,” Glenn said.
mlive.com‘It don’t look good:’ Detroit Lions rookie Jerry Jacobs suffers potentially serious knee injury
DENVER -- In another very bad season for the Detroit Lions, Jerry Jacobs has stood out as one of the year’s best stories. The promising rookie cornerback was carted to the locker room with a potentially serious left knee injury during the 38-10 loss on Sunday against the Denver Broncos. “But, yeah, it probably don’t look too good.”Jacobs came out of nowhere to help the Lions this season. He began his collegiate career at Arkansas State before transferring to Arkansas for his final season, then opted out after just four games and declared for this year’s draft. Then Jacobs went down on the game’s first drive, forcing practice-squad call-up Bradley Robey-Coleman to replace him.
mlive.comDetroit Lions sign safety Jalen Elliott from their practice squad
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions filled their open roster spot, signing safety Jalen Elliott from the practice squad to the 53-man. Elliott, much like Wright, has seen action in two consecutive games after getting elevated from the practice squad. He first landed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2020, spending most of the past year on the practice squad. Elliott joins Walker, Harris, Marlowe and C.J. The Lions also signed tight end Nick Eubanks and wide receiver Travis Jonsen to their practice squad.
mlive.comHalftime analysis: Dan Campbell’s daring onside kick, fake punt help keep Lions in game
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The Detroit Lions are riding the longest losing streak in the NFL. This was a mismatch of epic proportions, with the Lions a more than two-touchdown underdog for their game on Sunday against Matthew Stafford. Then again, nobody -- nobody -- could have predicted Dan Campbell’s strategy to neutralize Stafford: Just keep him off the field all together. After running back D’Andre Swift opened the game with a 63-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown, the Lions used an onside kick and a fake punt to tack on an Austin Seibert field goal. But Fox simply threw away from him, Detroit held onto the football again, and Seibert tacked on the field goal.
mlive.comKenny Golladay, Tracy Walker unlikely to play against Vikings after missing full practice week
Receivers Kenny Golladay (hip) and Jamal Agnew (ribs), along with starting safety Tracy Walker (foot) all seem unlikely to play in Minnesota after missing the entire practice week due to injuries. Marvin Hall and Quintez Cephus seem destined for bigger roles, while the recently signed Mohamed Sanu could be called up from the practice squad in a pinch. The biggest name to watch is Stafford, who went on the COVID list this week, but there’s no known reason why he couldn’t play on Sunday. Less is known about the status of linebacker Jarrad Davis, who is also on the COVID list. His case is not connected to Stafford’s, nor is practice squad safety Jalen Elliott, who also went on the list this week.
mlive.comLions place practice squad safety Jalen Elliott on COVID list; still no Kenny Golladay at practice
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions placed practice squad safety Jalen Elliott on the COVID-19 reserve list on Thursday. Elliott is the third Lions player to land on the list this week. While he joins quarterback Matthew Stafford and linebacker Jarrad Davis, Elliott’s inclusion on the reserve list is another independent case. He missed the first two games, returned at right guard and then moved outside to right tackle before leaving last week’s loss early due to another injury. Matt Nelson and Tyrell Crosby have each picked up reps at right tackle this season, with Crosby starting a handful of games along the way.
