MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – The family of a Macomb County woman who was left to die in the street last winter is asking for witnesses to come forward before the man accused in her death is sentenced.
Roger Criss, 43, pleaded no contest to failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death in the death of Michelle Campoy, 41. He’s expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
Michelle’s father, Joe Monforton, and stepmother, Sherry Monforton spoke to the Local 4 Investigators about the case.
They don’t believe that a hit-and-run is the whole truth and they hope that by sharing Michelle’s story someone will come forward with new evidence that could lead to a different charge.
They want justice for their daughter.
Joe and Sherry remember Michelle as a caring and compassionate person, and a good mother who loved to spoil her two children.
Michelle had only recently got back into their lives. She went missing in 2017 as a victim of human trafficking -- and was rescued almost seven years later and taken to a shelter for her protection.
In December of 2025, she was out of that program, and living in an apartment.
“Just beginning to get her life back, you know. Have her kids. And, unfortunately, that was taken from her,” Sherry Monforton said.
That December, Joe got a call from the hospital that no father ever wants to get.
“The hospital said that your daughter’s been injured. They believed a hit and run accident at the time. And said, ‘You need to be here.’”
Michelle found in area of Radde and Myrtle streets
Michelle had been found in the area of Radde and Myrtle streets in Clinton Township in the overnight hours of December 30 into December 31, 2025.
The police report the Monforton’s got through an open records request and shared with Local 4 state that Michelle was “breathing but not responsive.” She was found by officers just north of the stop sign on Myrtle Street after someone called 911 and rushed to McLaren Macomb.
On the evening of Dec. 31, 2025, her family had to make the difficult decision to take her off life support. Her cause of death was determined to be “multiple blunt force trauma to the head and trunk,” according to the autopsy report shared with Local 4.
“The neurologist said that there was no brain activity,” Joe Monforton said. “That her brain was swollen so bad they had to cut the side of her skull off.”

In June 2026, Roger Criss pleaded no contest to failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death. He could face up to five years in prison. He’s expected to be sentenced on July 28.
“We’re just hoping by doing this, somebody comes forward with more evidence, obviously. And we’re pleading to the judge to give the maximum sentence that she can possibly give with no probation,” Sherry said.
Local 4 Investigators reached out to both the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office and Criss’ defense attorney. We did not get a statement back from Criss’ attorney.
Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido released the following statement: “Every case must stand on the strength of its evidence. We owe it to victims, defendants, and the community to pursue justice based on facts, credible testimony, and proof that meets the legal standard required in court.”
