Detroit Lions release safety Jayron Kearse ahead of season finale
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have released safety Jayron Kearse heading into Week 17, the team announced Tuesday. Walker returned to a near every-down role without Kearse in the lineup last week. Duron Harmon, another pending free agent, has remained in a near every-down role since the season started. Kearse missed last week’s game with a hip injury despite missing only one defensive snap in the team’s Week 15 loss in Tennessee. Kearse will be available to claim via waivers to the rest of the league once his release is official.

Detroit released running back Ty Johnson on Thursday to clear a roster spot for Kearse. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Kearse signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Detroit as a free agent. The Lions drafted Johnson out of Maryland in the sixth round last year and he had 63 carries for 273 yards as a rookie. Detroit (1-2) hosts New Orleans (1-2) on Sunday.
