mlive.comSteve Yzerman: Best for Red Wings to remain patient with rebuild
Former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland faced some criticism when he remarked that rebuilds could take 10 years. The Red Wings began their rebuild by selling assets for draft picks at the 2017 trade deadline. They have missed the playoffs six years in a row, the past three under Steve Yzerman, which wasn’t unexpected given the task. How much longer can fans expect this rebuild to last before the team returns to the playoffs? “There’s good players that are potentially pending free agents,” Yzerman said.

Yzerman realized that wasn’t going to be the case when he returned to the Detroit Red Wings in 2019, replacing longtime GM Ken Holland. The Red Wings have ample salary cap space to make moves this offseason, if they can attract a higher-end free agent. Yzerman then surprised many by taking big German defenseman Moritz Seider with his first pick as Red Wings GM. He could become the Red Wings’ first Calder Trophy winner since Roger Crozier in 1965. He did what only one other recent Red Wings pick (Dylan Larkin) has done – reached the NHL without a stint with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Will Yzerman do anything in free agency?
The NHL Free Agency period starts today, meaning all free agents in the league will be able to make deals with teams. The Red Wings are not expected to be making any big trades, and they're not exactly what one might consider a top free agent destination, or ... are they? Yzerman could choose to acquire more talent through free agency in his first summer as Red Wings GM in an effort to speed this process up even more. Would Yzerman consider signing one of the top free agent defensemen, perhaps Anton Stralman (TBL) or Jake Gardiner (TOR)? Basically, there is reason for optimism and free agency can't ruin that.
