MATHIAS BROME

Dear Red Wings: Expansion draft primer, Sergei Fedorov quiz

We’re about a month out from the NHL’s Seattle Kraken expansion draft. Now’s a good time to get a handle on what to expect and how this will affect the Detroit Red Wings roster.

Detroit’s Dennis Cholowski and Mathias Brome reassigned to Grand Rapids

The Detroit Red Wings announced Monday that Dennis Cholowski and Mathias Brome have been reassigned from its taxi squad to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Cholowski, a 23-year-old defenseman, saw action in two games with Detroit this season, averaging 14:26 in ice time. Over three seasons as a pro, Cholowski has totaled 67 games as a Griffin (6-27—33) and 90 more as a Red Wing (9-15—24). A year ago, Cholowski recorded eight points (2-6—8) in 36 games with the Red Wings and 13 points (3-10—13) in 30 contests with Grand Rapids. Brome, a 26-year-old left wing, has registered one goal and eight penalty minutes in 24 appearances in his first season with the Red Wings.

Brome Gets 1st NHL goal In Win Over Panthers

Mathias Brome scored his first NHL goal late in the second period, and the Detroit Red Wings held on for a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday. Patrik Nemeth also scored his first goal of the season for the Red Wings, who won for only the second time in seven games. “I think we had a flat second period,” Florida forward Frank Vatrano said. Detroit’s Anthony Mantha hit the post on a breakaway with just under four minutes remaining in the third, but the Red Wings didn’t end up needing the insurance goal. There was a moment of silence before the game after the death of Sergei Tchekmarev, a longtime team masseur for the Red Wings.

Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves and Mathias Brome snapped a tie with his first NHL goal to lead the Red Wings past the Florida Panthers 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings withstood a lot of pressure in the final minutes. The Red Wings scored two unanswered goals in a strong second period that saw that take the momentum and a 2-1 lead. Mathias Brome’s NHL transition tough, but Red Wings remain optimistic

The high-scoring winger from Sweden has no points in 13 games with the Detroit Red Wings. Rasmussen, Cholowski need timeBlashill explained why young players like Michael Rasmussen and Dennis Cholowski are playing in Grand Rapids rather than gaining more NHL experience with the Red Wings. When he’s ready to do that, he’ll show that.”Cholowski is not good enough defensively to replace one of the Red Wings’ top-six defensemen. The Red Wings want both to be dominant in the AHL. DeKeyser has sat five games; Blashill described him as playing on one leg due to back surgery a year ago.

A look at Red Wings advanced stats through Feb. 8, 2021

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JANUARY 30: Mathias Brome #86 of the Detroit Red Wings looks on in the third period while playing the Florida Panthers at Little Caesars Arena on January 30, 2021 in Detroit, Michigan. The Red Wings are sitting at the very bottom of the eight-team Central Division. I’d like to take a second to give us a better picture of Red Wings players’ performances to this point with the help of some advanced hockey statistics, even though we have a limited sample size right now. This indicates that the top five players for the Red Wings here are being opportunistic. Game-by-game analysis is what I would suggest for the Red Wings right now.

Red Wings might as well go with younger players

Defensive breakdowns put the Red Wings behind 3-0 less than five minutes into the game. The Red Wings (2-7-2) have lost seven in a row (0-5-2) and face the Lightning again on Friday. The Red Wings haven’t gotten it done with veterans like Frans Nielsen, Valtteri Filppula and Darren Helm in the lineup. As hopes for better results quickly fade during this abbreviated 56-game season, the Red Wings should provide more opportunities for younger players. I didn’t give him a timeline.”More: Red Wings look for Rasmussen, Cholowski to further develop in AHL

Red Wings offense stifled in first game back: A few bright spots

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings were a team without any real offensive threat in their first game in about 10 months Thursday night. However, there were a few bright spots for the new-look Red Wings, a team with a list of additions to the lineup. He signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings this past spring, then scored 20 points in 23 games with Orebo. Hopefully he can help the Red Wings find the back of the net. Red Wings takes: Offensive concerns not alleviated in opener

The Detroit Red Wings had by far the worst offense in the NHL in 2019-20. The Red Wings, back after a 10-month layoff, managed only 14 shots on goal in a 3-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday in their season-opener at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings managed only one shot in two power plays. “My strength is to hold onto the puck and turn around in the offensive zone and get chances from that. “The line (with Valtteri Filppula and Sam Gagner) played fairly well, had a few chances.”More: 10 questions Red Wings face heading into season

10 questions Red Wings face heading into 2021 season

The Detroit Red Wings will have a different look after overhauling one-third of their roster following a historically bad 2019-20 season. Here are 10 questions facing the Red Wings as they start the 2021 season:How will Red Wings fare in temporarily realigned Central Division? Maybe the Red Wings can pass rebuilding Chicago, but even the Blackhawks, who upset Edmonton in the preliminary round, finished with 33 more points than Detroit. Odds are, the Red Wings will finish last. The Red Wings are pleased with big forward Givani Smith’s determination to get to the net and tenacity down low in the hard areas.

Red Wings waive Evgeny Svechnikov as roster decisions loom

The Detroit Red Wings had high hopes for Evgeny Svechnikov after drafting him 19th overall in 2015. “Unfortunately, Evgeny has had a number of injuries so he hasn’t been able to show a full season of where he’s at,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. The Red Wings open Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit). Evgeny Svechnikov has appeared in 20 games over parts of three seasons with the Red Wings (two goals, two assists). Brome’s stock risesSvechnikov might have lost a roster spot to Mathias Brome, a skilled, two-way 26-year-old winger the Red Wings signed to a one-year contract as a free agent in April.

Takeaways from Red Wings’ first training camp scrimmage

The Detroit Red Wings played the first of three camp scrimmages Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. On the blue line, Marc Staal will be relied for basically only defense, but he also scored a goal. He’s been good on the penalty kill, good on the power play, and he’s been good five-on-five. “Whether it’s a game or scrimmage, just to get back in game shape and game format was fun,” Bertuzzi said. Forward Turner Elson scored a goal in the first period but left in the second period after an apparent knee injury.
