Former Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle is returning to a familiar place. One week after stepping away from his position with the Mavericks, the veteran NBA coach agreed to a four-year deal with the Indiana Pacers. He led Indiana to three playoff appearances, which included a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2003-04. In between his tenure as an assistant and as the Pacers head coach, he had a stop in Detroit from 2001-2003. He led Detroit to back-to-back 50–32 records and playoff appearances.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter. Behind the strength of its high-powered bench led by Frank Jackson and Hamidou Diallo, the Pistons kept the Mavericks in their sights. Detroit had some help from rookie Isaiah Stewart, who hit two 3-pointers as the Mavericks (35-27) continued to pressure the Pistons in the fourth quarter. He made all six of his free throws in the fourth quarter, giving Dallas just enough offense to start pulling away toward the end.
