Red Wings sign center Andrew Copp to five-year deal
The Detroit Red Wings hope they ungraded their second-line center spot Wednesday by signing Andrew Copp to a five-year, $28.125 million on the first day of NHL free agency. Copp (6-1, 206) turned 28 on July 8 and is coming off his best season, split between Winnipeg and the New York Rangers. Copp spent his first eight-plus seasons with the Jets before being moved to the Rangers at the trade deadline. The Red Wings’ top priority was upgrading their second-line center spot. Copp could man that spot with Jakub Vrana and Robby Fabbri, when he returns from his ACL injury.

Thomas Greiss turned in a strong 37-save performance Thursday and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 in a shootout at Madison Square Garden. Greiss improved to 6-0-1 during his career against the Rangers, including a 4-0 mark at MSG. Mika Zibanejad scored on New York’s first shootout attempt before Greiss stopped the next five shooters. Lucas Raymond also scored in the shootout for the Red Wings (23-22-6), who improved to 12-1-6 in one-goal games. The Rangers scored on their lone power play of the game to tie it 2-2 at 11:51 of the third period.
