Bay City man convicted of robbing bank, calling in bogus bomb threats
WEST BRANCH, MI — A jury deliberated for about a half-hour before convicting a Bay City man of robbing a Rose City bank, then calling in bomb threats to cover his tracks. As police responded to those reports, Mier entered Rose City Mercantile Bank, 505 S. Bennett St., and implied he had a weapon. This is the second time Mier has been convicted of bank robbery. In January 2008, a judge sentenced him to two concurrent terms of 57 months to 15 years in prison on resulting convictions of bank robbery and unarmed robbery. When Oregon’s most populous city had a rampant gang problem 30 years ago, Portland detectives were stunned if they found more than a few dozen bullet casings after a shooting. Now, police are recording multiple shootings a week with 50 to 70 shots fired, and in one case more than 150, as gang attacks and retaliatory shootings again spiral into a vicious cycle. If nothing changes, Portland will surpass its all-time record for homicides of 70 set in 1987, when the city was in the midst of a gang siege.
