Sheriff: Workers maybe sparked country club fire with torch

Surveillance camera footage shows maintenance workers using a propane torch prior to a blaze that destroyed a century-old clubhouse at a suburban Detroit country club, authorities said Thursday. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the Oakland Hills Country Club has estimated the loss of the clubhouse at about $80 million. The video footage found on a server in a water-logged basement of the clubhouse appears to show the workers attempting to douse a small fire in a wall using a garden hose on Feb. 17, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a news conference.

Ryder Cup 'injury' envelope has new twist amid COVID threat

As if there wasn’t enough suspense and second-guessing of the Ryder Cup captains in past years, a nod to the COVID-19 pandemic could make things more topsy-turvy than usual this time around. The last time the envelope was actually opened was at the Belfry in 1993, when Scotsman Sam Torrance had to withdraw because of a foot injury and his match against Lanny Wadkins — whose name was in the U.S. envelope — was ruled a tie. Under the current agreement, Stricker would be able to replace a single player with anyone he chooses — from non-playing assistant captain Phil Mickelson to a player who flies in at the last moment.

US team for Ryder Cup has 6 qualifiers, 6 captain's picks

The changes announced Wednesday, June 10, 2020, account for golf not being played for three months during the coronavirus pandemic. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall, File)U.S. captain Steve Stricker would pick half of his 12-man Ryder Cup team under a revised points system that accounts for golf not being played for three months during the COVID-19 pandemic. That leaves 12 events for Americans to earn Ryder Cup points for the Sept. 25-27 matches at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, assuming the Ryder Cup is held this year. The PGA Tour canceled 11 events, nine that pertain to the Ryder Cup. The British Open was canceled, while the the U.S. Open has moved to the week before the Ryder Cup and the team already will have been set.

Report: PGA Tour restart could happen without fans in attendance

With three of the four majors back on the PGA Tour schedule for the second half of 2020, its now time to focus on a potential Tour re-start. In a PGA Tour memo sent to players on Thursday obtained by Golf Channel, the Tour indicated it would hold a meeting with the players advisory council next Tuesday. After the Charles Schwab Challenge, the next three Tour events remain in place on the current PGA Tour Schedule. The weekend of June 18-21 which originally would have been U.S. Open weekend is open for a potential PGA Tour Tournament, according to the Tours website. One of the big risks in restarting professional sports like the PGA Tour is in allowing fans to assemble.
