SHERRONE MOORE

Our favorite photos from Michigan football’s Spring Game

ANN ARBOR – Michigan football gave fans a sneak peek of its 2022 team Saturday, showing off a split roster scrimmage for the annual Spring Game. The Blue team, led by co-offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, defeated the Maize team, led by co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale, 20-12. Warren Davis and Alex Orji saw time for the Maize team, while Alan Bowman led the blue team, with J.J. McCarthy in uniform but remaining the sidelines after arm injury limited his spring practice. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was named honorary captain for the game, and led the coin toss and a throwing exhibition at halftime. Michigan spring game: Notes, players, positions to watch

The Wolverines are hosting their annual “Maize & Blue” spring game this Saturday, April 2, at Michigan Stadium (Noon ET, Big Ten Network), and for the first time in three years it’ll be open to the public. The Michigan roster has been split into two teams (Blue, Maize) via draft that took place earlier in the week. Sherrone Moore, Michigan tight ends coach, watches before an NCAA college football game against Rutgers in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019. Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara (12) throws a pass while warming up before their college football game against Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, on Saturday, September 4, 2021. Sherrone Moore, Jesse Minter are Michigan football’s highest-paid assistants

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh’s assistant coaches at Michigan all received new contracts with pay raises in recent months, making Sherrone Moore and first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter the highest-paid on staff. Weiss, meanwhile, signed a new three-year contract on Feb. 24 that boosted his pay from $600,000 to $850,000 per year, with identical performance bonuses. The duo have a tall task ahead of them following the abrupt departure of Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, whose pay topped $1 million annually. • Running backs coach Mike Hart signed a new two-year contract on Feb. 22 that will pay him $550,000, up from the $430,000 in 2021. Michigan is coming off a successful 2021 season in which it finished 12-2, won the Big Ten championship and earned a College Football Playoff berth.

New co-OCs eager to make Michigan football’s offense ‘best it’s ever been’

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh has preached collaboration among his coaches for years now at Michigan, and the 2022 season is going to be no different on offense. This year, Moore — who earned the co-coordinator title last year, but didn’t call any plays — will tag team everything with Weiss, Michigan’s quarterbacks coach, to help revamp the Wolverines’ offense. “Just because we know each other,” said Moore, Michigan’s offensive line coach, told reporters last Wednesday. “When you watch the tape, the first thing that you’d say is, ‘Wow, that is a great offense,’” Weiss said. “We set records and for Michigan, it was a historically great offense.

Wolverine recruiting report: The battle 2023 four-star OL Cayden Green

One of those recruits set to take in a practice this weekend is Lee’s Summit (Missouri) North four-star offensive lineman Cayden Green. 7 offensive tackle in the country, according to 247Sports’ Composite system. I enjoy Coach Moore a lot. And then Coach Harbaugh, I enjoyed him.”With his March visit, Green will get a glimpse of Moore’s coaching style in an on-field setting. “I enjoy coach Moore,” Green told the Maize and Blue Review this week.

Jim Harbaugh reveals duties for Michigan’s new offensive coordinators

For the first time in the Jim Harbaugh era, Michigan plans to enter a season with two coaches in charge of the play calling. The role of offensive coordinator has been murky in previous years. “Co-coordinators, and we’re going to split the play-calling duties,” Harbaugh said last week on the “In the Trenches” podcast, confirming his plan unveiled earlier this month. More: Michigan football sets date for spring game; practice begins today“Sherrone is going to be, really, dedicated to still coaching the offensive line, which is a huge undertaking,” Harbaugh said. “The fortunate thing is, we’ve got Sherrone Moore, Matt Weiss, Mike Hart, Ron Bellamy — and adding Grant Newsome, who was also here last year,” Harbaugh said.

Michigan football sets date for spring game; practice begins Monday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football has set a date for its annual spring game — and Jim Harbaugh says it will be open to the public this year. “Even if we have to pause before that, we’ll do the spring game April 2.”The annual game was held last April at Michigan Stadium, but limited to family of parents and staff due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Practice will resume on Monday, March 7, with the schedule leading right into the spring game on April 2. And it’ll be a football game. We’ll make it as much like a football game as can be made.

Wolverine recruiting report: Michigan football’s top targets in 2023 class

Michigan’s football program has all but put a bow on its 2022 recruiting class, and the staff’s attention has shifted to the 2023 cycle. It is full steam ahead as Michigan will look to continue to add to its 2023 class once the dead period ends March 1. He has 36 reported offers, including from Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan State, Penn State, Notre Dame and Oregon. In an ideal world for the Wolverines, Moore would play one season behind J.J. McCarthy before assuming the starting role in 2024. “He’s got a really strong relationship with director of recruiting Aashon Larkins,” The Michigan Insider’s Brice March told MLive earlier this month.

Jim Harbaugh’s biggest hits: Staff overhaul, Xs and Os changes have Michigan relevant again

Nowadays, the Michigan head coach has reentered the college football lexicon for another, perhaps better reason: Winning. They won their first Big Ten championship as a program since 2004, well before Harbaugh arrived on the scene. If Michigan was going to make any inroads on the success they had built in Harbaugh’s first six years, a change near the top was required. Not only did Michigan ditch the traditional 4-3 front defensively, but Mike Macdonald and co. had no issue being aggressive — switching alignments and introducing a 4-2-5 base look into the playbook. In a way, this year was the perfect storm for Harbaugh and Michigan, two parties that were at a crossroads just 12 months ago.

Michigan offensive line wins best-in-nation Joe Moore Award

That’s because the Wolverines’ offensive line won the prestigious Joe Moore Award on Tuesday, voted on by a panel of 13 football minds and media members to recognize the nation’s most outstanding offensive line. Michigan gave up just 29 negative rushing yards all season on 439 non-quarterback carries. “We really tried to bring as much energy as we could to practice everyday and just kind of set the tempo. Moore has reinvigorated the group and served as co-offensive coordinator, in charge of organizing Michigan’s run game. “I think that was a huge part of our success, and I think coach Moore brings energy every single day.

Michigan football adds 5 new players to top-10 recruiting class on early signing day

Michigan football received five new commitments in one day Wednesday, boosting its 2022 recruiting class into the top 10 during the early signing period.

Michigan football lands commitment from 2020 four-star OT Andrew Gentry, a former Virginia recruit

Michigan’s football program picked up a notable commitment on Wednesday, albeit from a surprising candidate. Andrew Gentry, a former four-star offensive tackle in the 2020 class, will sign with the Wolverines during the early signing period this month and join the program in May, according to 247Sports. Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced last Thursday that he is stepping down, opening the door for Michigan. “He met with coach Jim Harbaugh, coach Sherrone Moore and coach Shaun Nua yesterday and gave them his commitment,” Gentry’s father, Todd Gentry, told 247Sports. He really, really wanted to go to Michigan.

Michigan’s game plan to run over Ohio State began in spring

“Back in spring ball, that was something we felt we could do,” Harbaugh said after Saturday’s win. And that’s just not Michigan football.”Before Saturday, Ohio State boasted the second-best rushing defense in the Big Ten, a unit that only allowed 102.3 yards per game. “It was dominant on the offensive line, no question about it,” Harbaugh said. In a previous interview earlier this year, Moore, the first-year offensive line coach, described a unit that played with a physical identity. “We’ve been able to run the ball on a lot of teams that other teams haven’t been able to.

‘Everybody’s like brothers:’ Improved culture leading to better results for Michigan football

ANN ARBOR – Michigan players and coaches spoke ad nauseum during preseason camp about the improved culture and team chemistry from a season ago when the Wolverines finished 2-4. “The guys, when they walk in the building, they’ve got life about them,” Michigan assistant coach Sherrone Moore told reporters Wednesday. It’s a fun staff to be around, and the players really feed off of that. “I think It is just determination and drive,” Clinkscale said on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show Monday night. That is more of what I see.”Moten concurred and said players are dedicating more time to football this year.

Josh Gattis still leads Michigan’s offense, but he’s getting more input from others

If there’s one thing Josh Gattis has been consistent about during his tenure at Michigan, it’s been his messaging. Gattis candidly admitted earlier this month that he wished he could have scrapped everything from that 2-4 season. I feel the best about our offensive staff as I’ve ever been. “I think the great thing about coach Gattis is, since I’ve been here, it’s not about him,” Moore said. The trust is there between the staff and Josh, and Josh and the rest of the offensive staff.

Camp battles will help shape Michigan’s offensive line this fall

With new offensive line coach Sherrone Moore in charge up front, the Wolverines have reverted back to their philosophy of playing their five best players. Stueber lined up at tackle and guard last year, while Zinter is in the running inside at either guard or center. “If it’s Zinter there (at center), then you’re going to see right tackle that would most likely be the position (of change),” Harbaugh said. “Stueber would move to right guard, and then right tackle could be Trente Jones, (or) could be Karsen Barnhart. But Stueber, speaking to reporters recently in Detroit, says he has no issue playing right guard or right tackle.

Every Michigan football assistant coach, new and returning, was present at the “Michigan Football Showcase” event sponsored by Sound Mind Sound Body at Ferris State University, and Harbaugh couldn’t stop praising them to a group of assembled reporters. “Just a lot of energy,” Harbaugh, now 57, said. What we learned about Michigan football this spring

Michigan’s football team wrapped up its spring schedule on Saturday with a scrimmage at Michigan Stadium, a culmination of a busy offseason that saw wholesale changes to the coaching staff and roster. There were lots of questions before the spring schedule, and many of them remain unanswered as players and staff begin the transition to summer. That seems to jive with what we’ve been told all spring long, from players and coaches on the team. In years past, the spring was full of position battles and lack of clarity when it came to the depth chart. Improvement needs to happen, too, especially up front and in the secondary, where Michigan started two new players at cornerback in 2020.

Michigan’s new QBs coach now fourth highest-paid assistant on staff

Michigan’s new quarterbacks coach will be the fourth highest-paid assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2021. That makes him fourth on the staff in annual base pay, behind only defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald ($1 million), offensive coordinator Josh Gattis ($900,000) and co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist ($680,000). Michigan’s previous quarterbacks coach, Ben McDaniels, who was not retained, collected a $400,000 base salary in 2020. To make room for Weiss, Harbaugh reconfigured his already announced staff -- moving recently hired assistant Ron Bellamy from receivers to safeties, and recently hired assistant George Helow from safeties to linebackers. “But also hire coach Weiss, who I know really good.

Michigan football has new coach, depth along offensive line

Michigan’s offensive line is set to return one starter at tackle and two at guard, but will be tasked with developing a second tackle and identifying a starter at center to help snap the ball. Related: Another NFL mock draft has Jalen Mayfield in first roundImprovement is a must for Michigan’s offensive line in 2021. While that certainly does not fall exclusively on the offensive line, the group certainly plays a part. So, while Michigan loses its best offensive lineman (Mayfield) and likely starter at center (Carpenter), there’s good depth at tackle and options to make this thing work. But an early start to spring and full offseason should help, making Michigan’s offensive line a potential strength this fall.

Storylines to watch as Michigan football kicks off spring practice

It might be earlier than usual, but Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan football team is set to kick off spring practice Monday in Ann Arbor. Remember, Michigan went without a spring practice season last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so any additional work this year is welcomed. First things first, Jim Harbaugh has to get his coaching staff figured out. But reports say Weiss will join the staff as quarterbacks coach, a position Harbaugh said he was going to coach. And with so many positions open and changes to the coaching staff, everyone’s starting fresh.

Michigan’s tight ends, marred by drops, have new leader, coach

Tight ends were so plentiful on the roster at the time, first-year position coach Sherrone Moore was licking his chops upon arrival in Ann Arbor. Tight ends are utilized heavily for blocking the run-pass option given to the quarterback. But the abbreviated 2020 season, just six games in its entirety thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, was marred by the inordinate number of dropped passes by tight ends. Michigan’s collection of tight ends will be led by a new (yet familiar) face in Jay Harbaugh, who moves over from coaching running backs (while still coordinating special teams). His immediate task will be to bring All and Schoonmaker along, while developing Hibner into a college tight end.

Michigan football staff shakeup continues: Ed Warinner out for Ron Bellamy

A major staffing shakeup is happening on the offensive side of the ball at Michigan, Saturday evening reports say. Additionally, West Bloomfield High School coach and former Michigan football player Ron Bellamy has agreed to join the staff in an undisclosed role, likely on special teams, according to 247Sports. His contract expired on Jan. 11, and has not been renewed, leaving him as the odd-man out on staff. Stadium’s Brett McMurphy reports that Warinner is expected to depart, opening up a spot on the staff. He joins Josh Gattis, who will enter his third season as offensive coordinator at Michigan in 2021.

Contracts for six of Jim Harbaugh’s assistants expire next month

While Jim Harbaugh’s future at Michigan gets sorted out, more than half of his assistant coaches are in limbo about their job status for next season. MLive recently obtained contracts for all 10 of Michigan’s assistants and found six of them are set to expire next month, Jan. 11, throwing a monkey wrench into the idea of Harbaugh returning with just one year left on his deal. And Zordich and Harbaugh are the last two remaining assistants from Harbaugh’s 2015 staff, his first at Michigan. Shoop has been working remotely and not been in the presence of the team for months for undisclosed reasons, reports say. Michigan TE Erick All has his confidence back

Michigan’s Erick All has his confidence back. The sophomore tight end nearly had as many dropped passes (four) than receptions (five) in the first three games of the season. I just felt like I just needed to trust myself, and once I found that trust in the Rutgers game, I felt confident. “Believe it or not, that (drop) in the game, probably was like the first time I’ve dropped the ball the whole season. “We’ve got full confidence in his abilities, so we’ll just continue to work those little things with him.”Get Wolverine Confidential texts straight to your phone from our Michigan football writers.

Michigan confident that TE Erick All can shake the drops

Three games into Michigan’s 2020 season and dropped passes continue to plague Erick All. “For him, really, it’s areal simple fix,” tight ends coach Sherrone Moore told reporters on Wednesday. In August, fellow Michigan tight end Nick Eubanks said All practices “locked in every day” and “catches everything.”More: Young Michigan DE hopes to use ‘do or die’ game to put his name on the mapYet, All’s production (five catches, 46 yards) hasn’t quite matched the talk. “I think he gets a little hyped up, a little amped up at times, and he puts a lot of pressure on himself. All will get another opportunity to shake the struggles this Saturday when Michigan hosts No.

Michigan football without starting tight end vs. Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — The Michigan football team will be down at least one offensive starter Saturday night, missing tight end Nick Eubanks. That means Michigan will lean on sophomore Erick All at the tight end position. All appeared in 11 games during the 2019 season but offered little production, catching one pass for 10 yards. It’s huge for him,” Michigan tight ends coach Sherrone Moore said in September. • Michigan appears to have only brought two quarterbacks, expected starter Joe Milton and Cade McNamara.

Michigan coaches consider TE Erick All a budding star

When Sherrone Moore joined the Michigan coaching staff in 2018, the tight ends coach remarked at how deep and talented his unit was. The Wolverines returned two of their three most prolific receivers from a season prior, and had others waiting in the wings. “He’s played a lot of football here,” Moore said on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show last week. Much will be expected of Eubanks this fall, not only from a production standpoint but in helping develop the next star at tight end. “When you’ve got Erick and you’ve got Nick and you’ve got (Schoonmaker) and Ben (Mason) in that room, our tight-end room has been exceptional this camp.
