Tim Allen’s yacht spills diesel into up north Michigan marina

NORTHPORT, MI – A diesel spill from a Michigan celebrity’s yacht closed an up north marina and adjacent beach during the recent holiday weekend. Authorities confirmed between 30 and 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the water in Northport’s marina because of a faulty fuel filter seal on a yacht owned by Tim Allen. Northport’s marina was closed for about 12 hours after the diesel spill Sunday afternoon, while a nearby beach was closed for a day. Officials said the spill was reported around 5 p.m. Sunday when Allen’s boat entered the marina. The fire chief said some ducklings and a few fish died in the marina because of the diesel spill, but wider negative impacts on wildlife are not expected.

But a sign of unity arrived in the Motor City on Wednesday when a Christmas tree arrived at Campus Martius Park ahead of the city’s annual tree lighting ceremony, which is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The tree lighting event is a highlight each year as it symbolizes the start of the holiday season, goodwill and unity in the diverse city. Peters, James make final cases in Michigan’s Senate race

Peters, the only non-incumbent Democrat to claim a Senate seat in 2014, is one of just two Senate Democrats running in a state Donald Trump won four years ago. Public polls have shown him extending his lead over James, a Black businessman and Iraq War veteran, but Republicans who see an opening insist James has a shot. He aims to be the first Michigan Republican to win a Senate seat in a quarter-century. James, unlike other Republican Senate candidates, has largely kept pace in fundraising with his opponent. Peters joined Biden and former President Barack Obama at events in the Democratic strongholds of Detroit and Flint on Saturday.

Working parents find it's nearly impossible to make plans with dwindling child-care options

Even before the pandemic, families struggled to find affordable child care. Almost immediately, many parents became stopgap teachers and child-care providers, all the while juggling working from home. Particularly hard hit would be Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah, which would lose more than 60% of their states' child-care supply. "I'm scared to lose my position but at the same time cannot just leave my daughter," Ruey said. Beyond the specific amount to pay for child care, says Tarif Carson, a certified financial planner at Facet Wealth in Norristown, Pennsylvania, the top concerns are safety, logistics and overall finances.
