Pistons’ get all-around team effort in Sunday’s win over Cavaliers
It was very much a team effort with several players having their time to shine throughout the night. Plus, the team had a big night from its second unit, which currently ranks second in the league in average points per game. With such a strong all-around night, Casey said Sunday evening’s win should serve as a reminder to the Pistons of what it takes to have consistent success in each game. With a huge offensive boost from Jackson, the Pistons whittled the Cavaliers’ lead down to two with 1:15 remaining in the first. It comes on a night when the Pistons went up against a Cavaliers team that is known for its length and ability to disrupt plays in the paint.

Behind Trey Lyles electric start to the fourth quarter, the Pistons found a way to stave off the Magic and win 97-92 on Saturday night. But Gary Harris knocked down a triple and drove to the basket to bring the Magic within 86-85 of the Pistons with 5:34 remaining in the game. Cory Joseph tripled from the corner to extend the Pistons lead to four with 4:36 remaining in the corner. Ross ended up earning four trips to the free-throw line that kept the Magic within reach of the Pistons in the final two minutes.

The Hornets rode their high-powered offense and the hot hand of Kelly Oubre Jr. to a 150-111 lead. Oubre made a career-high nine three-pointers and scored 24 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter. They opened the fourth quarter 1-of-5 overall before Josh Jackson split a pair of free throws to stop the team’s scoring drought. The 24-year-old scored 15 points, with 14 of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Veteran forward Jerami Grant will be out indefinitely after suffering torn ligaments in his right thumb, per reports. Following Saturday’s practice, Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said that Grant’s thumb was a little tender but the X-rays on it came back negative. The Pistons announced Grant’s injury on Sunday morning as a UCL ligament sprain of the right thumb. With Grant now set to miss several games, the Pistons will have to make another adjustment to the team’s rotation. Through 25 games, Lyles has played 56 percent of his minutes at the five.

He was hot from long range too, as he sank four of his six shot attempts from distance. Four players made three or more of their shots from a distance as the Pistons ended the night with one of their better nights from long range.

The Detroit Pistons came within striking distance of the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night but couldn’t quite get over the hump. On Wednesday, though, the Bucks (11-8) maintained control from start to finish, outscoring the Pistons in all four quarters. The Bucks got into a groove early by getting out a 14-0 run before the Pistons even got on the board. With Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the way with 33 points, the Bucks did not let the Pistons get into a rhythm long enough to take the lead. The Detroit Pistons announced on Thursday that test results revealed Kelly Olynyk suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s game against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. In the waning minutes of the team’s matchup against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Olynyk banged knees with Jalen Green as he set a screen. Olynyk will be re-evaluated in six weeks by team medical staff and further updates will be provided as appropriate. The Pistons often looked to Olynyk to provide them with scoring off the bench and spacing on the floor.

The Detroit Pistons continued their work in free agency Monday by reportedly bringing back veteran point guard Cory Joseph and adding forward Trey Lyles. The team signed Joseph to a two-year, $10 million deal according to Yahoo! Joseph initially came to Detroit in March from the Sacramento Kings via a trade for Delon Wright. Now the Pistons have a veteran point guard on hand to aid with the development of the team’s young players, particularly second-year point guards Killian Hayes and Saben Lee. The deals come in addition to an earlier transaction where the Pistons signed veteran center Kelly Olynyk.
