U.S. authorities say a superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch previously sanctioned for alleged money laundering has been seized by law enforcement in Fiji.

The Justice Department has charged a Russian oligarch with sanctions violations and has taken down a cybercrime operation controlled by a Russian military intelligence agency.

"Today marks our taskforce's first seizure of an asset belonging to a sanctioned individual with close ties to the Russian regime. It will not be the last," said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The yacht is among the assets linked to Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire and close Putin ally who heads the Moscow-based Renova Group.

U.S. authorities accused Viktor Vekselberg of conspiring to commit bank fraud and money laundering in order to obscure ownership of his massive yacht.

It would be the first such seizure by U.S. authorities since Ukraine war-linked sanctions were imposed on the Kremlin.
