That decline has tourism officials scrambling to salvage what they can. We see in the research right now that people need to be reassured about whats open and what's closed.Beyond attracting visitors, tourism officials are also promoting how their cities and states will keep visitors safe. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. The rampage at a Virginia Beach city government building was the latest in a string of high-profile mass shootings nationwide, between the high school killings in Parkland, Florida, and the Walmart massacre in El Paso, Texas. Virginia Beach Vice Mayor James Wood said he cant begin to understand the grief of the victims families, but investigators found nothing pointing to that. That has angered Nixon and others, who say they will be looking to the findings of a state commission being formed to examine the shooting. Among the five mass shootings with over 10 dead in 2018 and 2019, most became part of larger narratives involving national and emotional issues. Borato said that even if the eyes of the nation are elsewhere, in Virginia Beach people remember.

The TV spot quotes a woman who survived the Virginia Beach mass shooting in May and claims Republican incumbent Bill DeSteph hasn't done enough on gun control in the shooting's wake. In one TV ad, a survivor of the Virginia Beach shooting directly criticizes a Republican senator for not doing more to curb gun violence. The NRA, which relies more on member advocacy than large campaign contributions, hasn't come close to matching what gun control groups are spending.
