Michigan prep football notebook: Playoffs open with one of the highest scoring games ever
The opening round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs delivered some of the season’s most memorable performances last week. From last-second wins, high-scoring games and great individual performances, there was a lot to catch the eye of football fans. However, there was one game that was rather eye-popping as Waterford Mott and Saginaw Heritage competed in one of the highest scoring games in state history. Managing to fit 140 points into 48 minutes of gameplay, Waterford Mott defeated Saginaw Heritage, 77-63, to open the Division 2 playoffs.

FLINT – Davison will be hosting the Cardinal Classic Saturday Feb. 12 with some of the proceeds going to the Oxford Community Memorial and Victims Fund. The four-game boys basketball event will kick off at noon with a game between Chicago Trenton North (2-9) and Hamady (7-4). The finale will be between Grand Blanc (8-4) and Ferndale (10-2) at 5 p.m. Most Valuable Player awards for each game as well as team awards will be presented. Sophomore Kalieb Osbourne has had a great start to the season for Mott, and his Week 3 performance earned him Metro Detroit Player of the Week honors. The Waterford Mott and Redford Thurston football team are not playing this week, adding to a growing statewide list for teams missing games for various reasons, including coronavirus issues. The Oakland Press reports Mott canceled its game against Taylor because of “multiple COVID-19 cases within the JV team.”Mott was scheduled to face Taylor tonight. River Rouge was set to face Detroit Catholic Central tonight, but backed out after citing concerns over Catholic Central’s possible exposure to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s canceled its game against Detroit U-D Jesuit this week. Also, Redford Thurston is not playing this week for unconfirmed reasons, leaving Romulus to find a new opponent.
