Former Kalamazoo Wings forward wins Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay Lightning
KALAMAZOO, MI - For the second consecutive year, a former Kalamazoo Wings hockey player hoisted the Stanley Cup, as forward Yanni Gourde capped his fifth NHL season as a champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars, 2-0, on Monday to take the series in six games and capture their second Stanley Cup in franchise history, with Gourde playing a big part in the title run. Two of Gourde’s playoff goals came in the Stanley Cup Finals, including a power-play tally late in the second period of Game 4 that tied the contest at 3 and helped the Lightning pull out a 5-4 overtime win. The 28-year-old Gourde played one season with the Kalamazoo Wings in 2013-14, tallying 15 goals and 19 assists for the ECHL club, before getting called up to the American Hockey League’s Worcester Sharks. Lightning outlast Blue Jackets 3-2 in 5 OT thriller
TORONTO, ONT Brayden Point scored 10:27 into the fifth overtime, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Tuesday in the fourth-longest game in Stanley Cup playoff history. Point scored from just above the left circle, beating Joonas Korpisalo after the goaltender made an NHL-record 85 saves. Point also scored way back in the first period of Game 1 of the best-of-seven series. The teams combined for 151 shots most in a NHL game since the league began officially tracking the statistic in 1955-56. Its tiring for sure but then it gets fun at some point," Point said.
