Three women entrepreneurs are making waves in Detroit’s North End neighborhood by opening new shops that promise to invigorate the local community.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that a blighted hundred-year-old building in Detroit’s North End will be redeveloped into residential units with the support of local and state funding.

Located at the North End of Detroit, Michigan urban farming is doing more than just helping the neighborhoods food insecure; it is breathing new life into the community. Quan Blunt, Director of Operations at The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, told Mitch Albom , Just being in this open space with the plants, I think its very calming and therapeutic.Eighty-percent of the produce grown on the farms three acres gets distributed for free throughout the neighborhood. It is a mostly volunteer run initiative, and like most things, it too has been deeply impacted by the pandemic. The community is completely behind the farm and the team at Michigan Urban Farming is getting the job done. BOSTON Generations of Italian Americans embraced Christopher Columbus with little thought to the dark side of his legacy. There has always been the feeling that Italian Americans all feel the same way about Columbus, said Heather Leavell, 46, of Bedford, one of the founders of the group Italian Americans for Indigenous Peoples' Day. For some, however including Francis Mazzaglia of the group the Italian American Alliance the destruction leveled at the Columbus statue amounts to a hate crime against Italian Americans. Corrie Popp, a 46-year-old high school English teacher and Waltham resident, said many younger Italian Americans are ready to dump Columbus. Most Italian Americans are big-hearted people, said Popp, whose mother is of Italian descent.
