SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A project to improve and widen a stretch of Interstate 75 in suburban Detroit could take 10 years less than expected.
Construction started last year and was to take place in phases through 2030. However, that work on the roughly $1 billion project could be done as soon as 2020 under a new contracting model that shifts some responsibilities to construction companies.
The 18-mile (29-kilometer) project includes the roadway between Ferndale and Pontiac.
Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi that the "incentive is to do work on or ahead of schedule." And he says future contracts will be "dependent on performance." Motorists may see larger work zones, but they would be in place for less overall time.
