Google's mosquito project suppressed a population by 95%. Now it's coming to the U.S.
Google’s Debug Project is seeking federal approval to release up to 32 million specially bred male mosquitoes in Florida and California to combat disease-spreading Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. These males carry a harmless, naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia, which prevents wild mosquito eggs from hatching, drastically reducing mosquito populations without harming other insects or the environment. Previous releases in multiple countries have achieved over 80 percent suppression of target mosquitoes and significant reductions in dengue cases. The EPA is reviewing the proposal, with experts saying the ecological impact is minimal and the bacteria poses no health risk to humans or animals.
