Activists demand release of bodycam footage after police shooting

Police Chief Todd Bettison said the department plans to release body camera footage from a June shooting involving an armed 18-year-old in downtown Detroit once a court restriction is lifted. In a statement, the Detroit Police Department said the temporary restraining order stems from a lawsuit filed by the Detroit Police Officers Association challenging a city ordinance that the Detroit City Council approved in October 2025. According to the department, the ordinance would require Detroit police to release body-worn camera footage involving use-of-force incidents within 30 days.
