How to cope with workplace burnout

Chances are — you know this feeling. You’re tired. Not just physically tired — but tired of everything. You stop caring. You lose all motivation. You just can’t. That’s called burnout. And right now — it’s affecting more Americans than ever before. A lot of people think it’s just stress, but burnout is a very different story. With stress, your brain is in overdrive. You’re anxious, on edge, and everything is just too much. But with burnout, your brain just shuts down. It’s empty, you’re checked out and just done. One makes you feel too much; the other makes you feel nothing. So just how bad is burnout?  The numbers aren’t great. A recent study says two out of three full-time workers feel burned out. 80% say their job is hurting their mental health, and four out of 10 have actually quit a job because of burnout. Plus, 70 percent of people surveyed would turn down a higher-paying job if they had no mental health benefits. Lori Edelson, a licensed therapist and owner of the Birmingham Maple Clinic in Troy, joined Local 4 Live to help us navigate burnout and when to seek help.
