Metro Detroit forecast: Cold air returns

DETROIT – The cold air is moving on in and temps will be dropping all morning.

We will see low 30s quickly drop into the mid 20s and hold steady in the low and mid 20s this afternoon. The biggest challenge today is that wind. We will have gusty winds W 15-30 mph with gusts 30-40 mph making wind chills a dangerous issue, feeling like single digits most of the day and all day tomorrow. The winds will drag lake effect clouds and occasional snow showers into Metro Detroit today and tomorrow as well. A Winter Weather Advisory in Western Michigan today means the snow will be piling up closer to Lake Michigan (4-10") so be careful if you are driving west and bundle up.

More cold air and scattered, light snow showers Thursday. Morning lows in the low and mid teens with wind chills near zero, and highs will only reach the low 20s with winds WSW 10-20. A couple of days in a row of this make it a dangerous cold so layer up and avoid long stints outside if you can. Cold air sticks around through the weekend but with little to no precipitation expected after Thursday.

Temps warm next week just as a storm approaches Tuesday. There's a chance for light snow Monday afternoon, but a bigger storm works into Metro Detroit Tuesday as mainly rain. That's what the model data shows right now. It will switch to snow Tuesday Night and Wednesday and we could see a couple of inches.
