Dangerous cold in Metro Detroit: What to expect and when

Subzero wind chills start the week

4Warn Weather – Our Monday morning begins with wind chill readings nearly 25 degrees below zero.

A wind chill warning remained in effect this morning for Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. A wind chill advisory was in effect for the rest of Southeast Michigan. The warning and advisory were set to expire at noon.

Dangerously cold wind chills ranging from -15 to -25 degrees (Fahrenheit) could cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

We’ve declared 4Warn Weather Alert days for both Monday and Tuesday due to the dangerous cold.

Today’s sunrise is at 8 a.m.

Monday starts with a little sunshine, but clouds will build on this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Highs will mainly be in the single digits, but temperatures will feel like they are subzero all day because of the wind chill.

Tonight’s sunset is at 5:26 p.m.

We’ll have a chance for flurries Monday night, but it shouldn’t lead to much accumulation. It is worth noting that with temperatures this cold, rock salt will not be as effective, so new slick spots could be possible Tuesday morning.

Dangerous cold continues

We may see another wind chill advisory in our western counties Tuesday morning. Wind chills are expected to get close to -15 degrees again.

Otherwise, highs on Tuesday will be back in the single digits.

I think we’ll see widespread wind chill readings to reach -15 degrees on Wednesday morning, though actual air temps will dip just below zero. Those wind chills would fall under wind chill advisory criteria, so we have to see if temperatures will lead to schools calling off the next two days.

More snow chances

We may have a little reprieve on Wednesday afternoon with highs in the teens.

There will be a chance for a few snow showers on Thursday and Friday.

We will end the work week and spend the weekend with highs in the low 20s.
