Strong storms likely in Metro Detroit on Wednesday after heat cranks up

4Warn Weather Alert issued for Wednesday afternoon, evening

DETROIT – Heat and humidity will be on the rise today. Partly cloudy with highs in the mid-80s. There is a slight chance for a few pop-up showers and non-severe storms today, but most of us remain dry. Our attention is focused on Wednesday and the severe storm threat across Southeast Michigan.

Strong storms Wednesday

We have issued a 4Warn Weather alert for Wednesday as Southeast Michigan is under a slight and enhanced risk for severe storms.

There will be a chance for morning/midday showers and storms as a warm front lifts across the region.

However, the greatest severe threat lies late Wednesday afternoon and evening as the surface low tracks across central Michigan with an attached cold front.

All hazards will be in play: Damaging wind gusts greater than 70 mph, a few tornadoes will be possible, large hail (greater than an inch in diameter) and heavy rainfall leading to flooding.

Rest of this week

Juneteenth will begin with pre-dawn showers before turning partly cloudy with seasonal highs around 80.

Friday is the summer solstice, which marks the first official day of summer -- and right on cue, we will crank up the heat. Mid-80s are on tap Friday, close to 90 on Saturday and well into the 90s Sunday through the first half of next week.

Ford Fireworks weather

The Ford Fireworks will be on Monday in Downtown Detroit and as of right now, pack the cooler with lots of chilled water!

You might want to also pack an umbrella, but not to block rain... you might want an umbrella or tent to protect you from the sun! Sunny and hot with highs in the mid-90s.
