Weather timing: Windows for 2 rounds of possible storms Wednesday in Metro Detroit

Second round of storms begins around 6 p.m.

DETROIT – Two rounds of storms are heading toward Metro Detroit on Wednesday, and the timing is coming into clearer focus.

A 4Warn Weather Alert has been issued in anticipation of these storms.

Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are possible as early as Wednesday afternoon. The first round of storms could possibly start as early as 11 a.m., and they should be out by around 4 p.m.

The greatest threat comes during the evening window of storms, which is from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Most of Southeast Michigan -- Western Wayne, Livingston, Washtenaw, Monroe and Lenawee counties -- is under an “enhanced” risk for severe weather, which is a level 3 out of 5.

The rest of the area is under a “slight” risk -- level 2 out of 5.

Temperatures rise into the mid-80s as the storms approach. The primary threats are damaging wind gusts up to 70+ mph and heavy rain.

Average rainfall totals will be around 1-1.5 inches, but we could see isolated higher amounts up to 3 inches. The heavier rainfall will track north of I-94.

A few tornadoes are possible. Large hail (1”+) is also possible, but is a secondary severe weather threat.

Rest of the week

Juneteenth will start with some early morning lingering showers before clouds break, giving way to afternoon sunshine. Highs will be around 80.

We rise back into the mid-80s on Friday under mostly sunny skies.
